Today we’d like to introduce you to Wesley Ryan.
Hi Wesley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Performance Dogs of Ohio started with one dog, one frisbee, and a simple love for the human-canine bond.
What began as a hobby quickly turned into something much bigger. I started training and competing in disc dog events just for fun, never imagining it would grow into a full-scale entertainment company. As we competed, we realized how much people were drawn not just to the athleticism, but to the connection between dog and handler. That spark is what really built the foundation.
Over time, one show turned into a few halftime performances. A few performances turned into festivals, fairs, and college sporting events. Today, Performance Dogs of Ohio performs hundreds of shows across multiple states each year, including NCAA basketball and football halftime shows, major festivals, libraries, corporate events, and community celebrations.
What makes us unique is that many of our dogs are rescues or started as family pets. Through positive training, consistency, and a lot of repetition, they’ve become world-class athletes. Some of our team members have won world championships, broken distance records, and performed in front of packed arenas with thousands of fans.
But at the heart of it all, it’s still about that original mission: showcasing what’s possible when you build trust, teamwork, and communication with your dog. Whether we’re performing at a packed arena or a small-town festival, our goal is the same — inspire families, promote active lifestyles with their dogs, and demonstrate the incredible things dogs are capable of when given opportunity and guidance.
From one frisbee in the backyard to national halftime shows, it’s been an incredible journey — and we’re just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road — and honestly, that’s what makes the story meaningful.
In the early days, one of the biggest challenges was credibility. When you tell people you run a “professional dog entertainment company,” you sometimes get a polite smile instead of a contract. We had to prove ourselves one show at a time. That meant driving long hours for smaller events, reinvesting everything back into equipment, travel, and training, and constantly refining our routines.
There were financial pressures too. Live entertainment is seasonal and unpredictable. Weather cancels shows. Budgets change. Events fall through. We had to learn how to diversify — halftime shows, festivals, libraries, corporate events — so we weren’t dependent on just one type of booking.
Training itself comes with challenges. These are living, breathing athletes. Dogs get injured. Dogs age. Some routines that work perfectly in practice suddenly fall apart in front of 10,000 fans. We’ve had moments where equipment failed mid-show or music didn’t play. You learn very quickly how to adapt under pressure.
Another challenge was growth. As demand increased, we had to build multiple teams, train more handlers, invest in trailers and sound systems, and maintain brand consistency across dozens — now hundreds — of performances. Scaling while keeping quality high is not easy.
But probably the most difficult part has been saying goodbye to dogs as they retire or slow down. These aren’t just performers — they’re family. Watching them age after years of giving everything to the sport is emotional.
That said, every obstacle forced us to get better. Every canceled show made us more prepared. Every tough season made us more resilient. The struggles shaped the professionalism and consistency we’re known for today.
It hasn’t been smooth — but it’s been worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Performance Dogs of Ohio is a professional canine entertainment company specializing in high-energy halftime shows, festivals, fairs, corporate events, and community celebrations. We combine world-class disc dog performances, agility demonstrations, trick routines, and interactive crowd engagement into one seamless live experience.
At our core, we specialize in showcasing the athleticism of dogs and the power of the human-canine bond. Our shows feature high-flying frisbee catches, long-distance throws, dock-diving style stunts, skateboard tricks, agility sequences, and choreographed routines set to music. But beyond the tricks, we focus heavily on storytelling. Many of our dogs are rescues or started as family pets, and we love highlighting their journeys from backyard companions to arena performers.
We’re especially known for our NCAA and professional halftime shows. Performing in front of thousands of fans in major arenas requires precision timing, reliability, and the ability to energize a crowd quickly. Our team is built to deliver under pressure — fast setup, high impact, and memorable moments that keep audiences talking long after the game ends.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the scale we’ve reached — performing hundreds of shows across multiple states — it’s the culture we’ve built. Our dogs genuinely love what they do. They’re trained through positive reinforcement and trust. The excitement you see on the court isn’t forced; it’s real.
What sets us apart is consistency and professionalism. We operate like a sports team. We train year-round. We travel with professional-grade sound systems and equipment. We have multiple performance teams so we can serve several large events at once without sacrificing quality. And we’ve built a brand that event organizers trust — they know we’ll show up early, adapt quickly, and deliver.
Most importantly, we don’t just perform tricks. We create connection. Whether it’s a packed arena or a small-town festival, our goal is to inspire people to engage with their own dogs, get active, and see what’s possible with patience and teamwork.
At the end of the day, we’re proud that we’ve turned something that started in a backyard into a nationally recognized entertainment brand — without ever losing the heart behind why we started.
