Rising Stars: Meet Mica Campbell of Downtown Hudson, Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mica Campbell.

Hi Mica , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Kent, Ohio, and went to Kent State University. After graduation, I moved away and spent time in New York City before settling in Los Angeles for about 15 years. We came back to Ohio about 3 years ago and I was excited to find such a charming town and welcoming community in Hudson. I wanted to be more a part of the community and I am also naturally an entrepreneur (before coming to Ohio, my husband and I briefly owned an Inn in Florida).

Opening a shop featuring the things that I love seemed a great way to contribute to the vibrancy of the community and become more involved in the town. When deciding what to offer in Hudson General, I wanted to focus on high-quality, American-made goods from companies and designers who do small-batch production (less waste, less landfill), and who pay fair wages.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel very luck to be in the position I am in. While we aren’t rich, we have both worked really hard to be in the position that we are in, which has allowed me to pursue some of the passions that I have harbored. I spent the first 20 years of my career working very hard to build some level of financial security – often choosing jobs that were maybe less “fun” or creative than my peers, but that offered a more stable foundation. Doing that, along with wisely investing in homes that gave us the opportunity to renovate and increase value, has enabled me to open this business and work toward profitability.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I recently opened Hudson General, a boutique in Hudson, Ohio. Prior to that, I owned an Inn in Florida. Prior to that, I spent a decade in residential real estate in Los Angeles, and a decade in marketing in NY and LA. I guess one of the main things that sets me apart from others is that I am willing to take the risk to leave a successful career and try my hand at another one!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If you don’t have endless funds, then you have to be willing to jump in and do the physical work. You can experience so much more if you are willing to take the risk and do the work.
