Rising Stars: Meet Kimberly of Columbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey began after witnessing firsthand how many young people were labeled as “troubled” when, in reality, they simply needed understanding, guidance, and opportunity. Through both personal experience and close involvement in my community, I saw how easily youth can fall through the cracks without consistent support. I knew something had to change.
That realization led me to found Pennington Gap, Inc., an organization created to provide a safe, supportive space where young people feel seen, heard, and empowered to rewrite their stories. Our mission is to meet youth where they are, help them recognize their potential, and equip them with the tools and confidence to build stronger futures.
In addition, I launched KB Agency, which provides services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Serving this population has been a calling I’ve felt since an early age. After working with several agencies across different states, I recognized that true success in this field requires more than training — it requires heart. This is not work you do simply for a paycheck; it requires genuine compassion and commitment.
My passion fuels everything we do. I find deep joy in witnessing the growth and development of individuals who were once given very limited chances to succeed. We celebrate every milestone, big or small, because progress is progress. Above all, we lead with consistency, patience, and the understanding that everyone needs support at some point in their life

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been incredibly meaningful, but far from easy.
Launching a nonprofit for youth came with challenges I hadn’t fully anticipated — limited funding, complex legal requirements, and the ongoing work of building trust within the community. There were also emotional challenges, as carrying the stories and needs of young people can be heavy at times. There were moments when I wished I could do more than resources allowed. Still, those challenges only strengthened my commitment and reminded me why this work is so important.
Starting KB Agency presented similar obstacles. Navigating regulations, securing funding, and addressing staffing shortages while ensuring the safety and dignity of the individuals we serve was often overwhelming. There were moments of exhaustion and uncertainty, but also powerful breakthroughs that made it all worthwhile.
Every challenge has shaped me as a leader and reinforced my resolve to create environments rooted in compassion, patience, and respect — spaces where people are recognized for their abilities rather than their limitations.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I serve as the Founder and CEO of Pennington Gap, Inc., and the Owner and CEO of KB Consultants Group and KB Agency.
My work focuses on advocacy, support services, and creating opportunities for youth and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I specialize in building programs that meet people where they are while helping them grow toward independence and confidence.
What I’m most proud of is building these organizations from the ground up — often with limited resources and many setbacks — and seeing the direct impact on the lives of the individuals and families we serve. The trust families place in us means everything.
What sets me apart is the heart behind the work. For me, this isn’t just a profession — it’s a calling. I lead with empathy, patience, and consistency. We don’t just provide services; we build relationships. We celebrate every success and walk alongside people through every challenge. That personal investment makes all the difference.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The most important resource in my life is the Bible. It serves as my foundation, my guide, and my source of strength. Whenever I feel uncertain or overwhelmed, I turn to my faith for clarity and direction.
I’ve learned that while people may sometimes fall short, God never does. My faith keeps me grounded, focused, and resilient, and it guides how I lead, serve others, and make decisions every day.
