Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike James.
Hi Mike , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started DJing in Kent in the spring of 2023. Playing sets at small dive bars and frat basements for exposure. Then in fall of 2023 I threw my first event during welcome weekend for Kent State. The turnout was unfathomable. We started at 8pm and by 10pm the fire department had to shut it down due to the amount of people who showed up. This event not only gave me a name locally but showed myself that DJing and promoting was a real passion I held. For the next 2 or so years I kept doing bigger and better events in kent and even got an opportunity through the university to open up for artists like Tinashe and Baby Tate. I’ve since been trying to make a name for myself in the Cleveland scene which has been an absolute blast so far.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Furthest thing from a smooth road.. When I began DJing I was without a car and not getting paid anything for my sets. I was actually spending $50+ a night on Ubers to where ever I was DJing and back home.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Producer/DJ. I specialize in DJing house music and I have an EP of unreleased tracks coming out in February. I am also very passionate about promoting events that I put together or apart of. I am most proud of my ambition and tenacity when it comes to getting my foot in the door of new opportunities. What sets me apart is my ability to read the room and get the crowd dancing. I have what some would call a bit of an unorthodox style of DJing when it comes to switching from genre to genre.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me is maintaining an open minded mindset and having a solid, supportive group of individuals in your corner
