Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Ronk.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello my name is Mark Ronk and I am the owner of Ronk Construction. Ronk Construction is a Concrete Contracting Company. We specialize in residential and light commercial concrete work. My very first concrete job was in 2003. At that time I was working for a home remolding contractor full time. An opportunity presented itself that year to do a concrete driveway for a family member. After that I continued to do concrete jobs on the side as I continued to work full time. I was really enjoying working with customers in designing and executing quality products. In 2006 I decided to leave my full time job and launch Ronk Construction full time. Starting out the business full time the only tools I owned was a worn out pick up truck and a few hand tools. As time passed over years the business grew, making it what it is today. We also began to offer more decorative options for our residential customers. My oldest son Tyler decided after college to come to work with me full time in 2021 making Ronk Construction a true family business. My wife Kim is also a part of the business assisting with the book keeping and other important tasks. My families support throughout the years has helped to make Ronk Construction a success for the past 23 years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the early years of the business I realized it was very important to invest in advertising and to reach more potential customers. Advertising in 2003 was very different than today. Social media, google maps, and smart phones did not exist. Some of the options at that time to advertise were flyers, local papers, and the phone book. We also had to sub work from other companies such as handyman businesses to keep the jobs coming. With most of the profits of the business going to the advertising of the company it left little to no funding for new tools or equipment. We had to bridge that gap by using mostly hand tools and renting equipment.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We set high standards for our employees. Our employees are trained in the aspects of the job and customer service. They are trained to go above and beyond for our customers. Such things as greeting our customers in a very nice professional manner and to look for things such as empty trashcans that need to be brought up from the street to help our customers are just a few examples. We have a core value system that must be learned and practiced by our employees.
We specialize in concrete flatwork in residential and commercial projects. Our residential project types consists of but is not limited to driveways, pole barn floors, patios, and sidewalks. Offering both standard finish and decorative options such as stamped and colored. Our commercial projects consist of but are not limited to sidewalks, ramps, curbs, and floors.
We strive to do the best job every time for our customers. Our attention to detail and customer service sets us apart form others.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
With my father passing away in 2004 from cancer my Uncle Dock was a very important mentor for me. He still is to this day. I also listened to other successful business owners along the way when they offered advice.
In the past I joined referral clubs and reached out to other businesses that could use our services.
The best referrals that I have found over the years have always came from our previous customers.
