Rising Stars: Meet Deb Oexmann of Troy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deb Oexmann.

Hi Deb, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1989 I was looking for a place to complete an internship for my Master’s of Environmental Sciences degree at Miami University in Oxford, when I found Brukner Nature Center. Upon meeting the Director, she offered me a full-time position as Teacher/Naturalist. And the rest, they say, is history. I’ve worked my way up through the organization, fueled by a passion for wildlife, discovering a love of teaching and finally, realizing a vison by managing this amazing place called Brukner Nature Center!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m not sure anyone’s professional journey can be described as smooth! As a zoologist I’ve had a lot to learn about teaching elementary-aged children, working with a Board of Trustees and managing people and a budget. But I must say that it’s been a wonderful ride.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My vision for Brukner Nature Center was to create a unique wildlife conservation center that not only engaged the public, but preserved a slice of native Ohio habitat. Our display philosophy has always been to capture the imagination through sharing the awe-inspiring adaptations of our native wildlife, by engaging the creative side through art and inspirational quotes and to ultimately encourage, maybe even challenge, visitors to spend time outside. We are home to over 50 wildlife ambassadors, native Ohio species no longer able to survive in the wild, and they are the stars of everyone one of our programs.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” ~Helen Keller
Calculated risks are a part of every profession, every life. They are something to be studied, weighed and enjoyed.

Pricing:

  • Brukner Nature Center has an admission of just $2.50 per person or $10 per family for non-mambers. BNC members enjoy free admission to the Interpretive Center and adventurous hiking trails all year long.
