Meet Erica Laaker of Northern Kentucky Medical Massage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Laaker.

Hi Erica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an adult survivor of child abuse. At a very young age I started to experience chronic pain. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Doctors prescribed medication that would be later taken off of shelves, due to causing health problems. I knew there had to be a better way. After doing some research, at age 18 I experienced massage for the first time. It was the first time in my life I had experienced any kind of relief. At that moment I knew I wanted to spend my life sharing that same relief with others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I am neurodivergent. I have Complex PTSD, as an adult survivor of child abuse I’m afraid nothing has or does come easy for me. But, I am so fortunate that my business is in a community like Fort Thomas. Everyone is so supportive.

When I moved to the Cincinnati area from California, I had nothing. But, the Gateway Massage School in Covington gave me the chance I needed. I was awarded the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship and was able to obtain my massage therapist certificate at no cost. Now I own a business that has won Best of NkY the last two years in a row, it supports four other therapists, besides myself, and we have improved the quality of life of hundreds of people.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Northern Kentucky Medical Massage?
Massage is the oldest form of medicine. We specialize in modalities of massage that help people manage their pain, recover from injuries and surgeries, manage depression and anxiety, increase range of motion, help with professional athlete performance and recovery, and we even provide massage to loved ones in nursing homes and hospice care that need nurturing touch.

We sit down with each client and create a customized treatment plan for every individual. We track progress and set goals. But, if you just want to come in and let the world melt away for a little while, we can do that too.

We are small. This means we know every face, every name, every story of everyone we see. Our personalized care is unmatched.

We care. We listen. We can help.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Ever since I came to the Cincinnati area, I have been shown great kindness. When I moved to the Midwest from California in 2012, I had nothing. People I barely knew helped me with groceries, clothes, housing, furniture, everything really.

Now I own a home, have a successful business, and am living life to the fullest. I would have never been able to have these things on the West Coast.

I can’t think of anything I don’t like about Cincinnati or Fort Thomas. They have given me the life I have always wanted. I am so grateful to these communities.
