Life & Work with Matthew Hohler of ELYRIA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Hohler.

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a desire to do something that made the difference in the lives of others. My career path has been quite unconventional. I have spent time teaching English in Honduras, running a health coaching business in Florida, to starting a coffee company working directly with farmers in South America.

I moved back to the Cleveland, Ohio area in 2019 after meeting my wife and starting a family. I spent 4 years working in home health and hospice and grew my passion for serving the senior community. In December of 2022, my wife, Emily, told me I wasn’t happy with my current career path and encouraged me to get back to my entrepreneurial ambitions. She had learned about the growing need for seniors as they downsize and move to a new home and senior living community, I jumped right in and launched a start-up business aimed at simplifying the downsizing process. Fast forward to today, we have grown to a team of 20 people, serving 600+ seniors and families on their journey to downsize and move into senior living. We have created a niche within the market, and have grown by leading with compassion, flexibility and trust for our team members and clients.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting a business is never an easy path, but one that I have found t be inspiring and motivating. The first year, as I laid the ground work, I was renting trucks, and leading every facet of the client journey, from the first phone call to actual moving day. As we have grown, we have added senior relocation specialists, professional organizers, an operations manager and a client success manager. We are currently working on opening a second location to have a greater presence throughout Northeast Ohio. The biggest challenge, as many entrepreneurs face, has been finding balance between work and home life. With 4 children, that is no easy task. We have focused on processes and systems as we have built to provide flexibility for ultimately what is most important, family.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are the go-to specialists for helping seniors downsize and move to a smaller home, or senior living, which primarily includes independent living, assisted living and memory care. We offer six a la carte services to allow families to decide how the project works best. From packing, moving and setting up an apartment, to home cleanouts, donations, disposal and deep cleaning, we turn gigantic stress-filled projects into streamlined delivery to accomplish a whole lot of work in a short period of time. Many of our clients our facing health issues, or the loss of a loved one that requires necessary changes to their daily living. Our team is compassionate, flexible and trustworthy, offering a comprehensive service, with a strong attention to detail in regards to what is most important to them. I am most proud of the way our team faces challenges with the same level of kindness and empathy, regardless of the circumstances. Some jobs are much more difficult than others, and we deliver no matter what is thrown our way!

How do you define success?
Success is simply defined on how much of a positive environment one can create for their team members and clients alike. Meeting people where they are at and serving them the best we possibly can is what I consider success to look like.
