Belinda Workman of Columbus on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Belinda Workman and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Belinda, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Being a single mom of 3, owning a business and helping manage another family business, means my days are usually filled and there isn’t much “me” time. This is something I have come to accept with having such high drive with goals, but I also need my “reset” days or hours.
I find my favorite reset activity is going in my backyard, and releasing my inner farm girl. I love to tend to my chickens and do gardening while my kids are playing outside. Something about this scene is so resetting to me, and takes me to simple, enjoyable moments. With a busy life, something as simple as stepping outside to do the “homestead” chores is so grounding. Collecting the eggs and feeling the joy over what my chickens produced for us that day. Seeing what my garden is giving us for the day. It’s the simple pleasures, the slower moments that bring me back.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Belinda Workman launched Lotte Naturals in 2018 after battling her own sensitivities, allergies, and autoimmune disease and realizing there wasn’t a skincare brand that truly aligned with whole-body health. What began as 13 original products has now flourished into over 75 skin and hair care recipes—all crafted fresh by hand, free of harsh preservatives, artificial dyes, and synthetic fragrance. Inspired by her daughter Charlotte (“Lotte”) and her German mother’s nickname for her, the brand name also reflects Belinda’s mission: Living Organically Through The Earth. Every formulation is powered by nutrient- and vitamin-rich ingredients, chosen not just to pamper the skin, but to nourish and support health from the outside-in. Unlike products that sit on shelves for months or years, Lotte Naturals is made fresh each week and delivered directly to stores and customers, ensuring customers experience the cleanest, most effective skincare possible.

You’ve heard of fresh food or meal subscription boxes—Lotte Naturals takes the same approach, but with skin and hair care. The brand is passionately committed to holding true to its promise of being authentically non-toxic, using natural preservatives such as elderberry to protect both product integrity and the body’s health. With new frontiers ahead—including a makeup line, animal care, and household products set to launch over the next five years—Lotte Naturals continues to expand its reach without ever sacrificing its roots. Every creation stands as a testament to Belinda’s belief that what you put on your skin matters just as much as what you put in your body, and that whole-body health begins with the most important organ of all: your skin.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
In my early 20s, my world shifted in a way I never expected. At just 23, I became very sick—losing weight, developing countless food sensitivities, feeling exhausted, and visibly unwell. I spent over a year going from doctor to doctor, undergoing endoscopies, colonoscopies, blood tests—you name it. Yet after all of that, I was simply told to take Pepsid. No real answers, no root cause, and no lasting relief. At the time, I had just finished my pre-med studies, had been accepted into medical school, and fully intended to become a doctor. But this frustrating journey with traditional medicine planted a seed of doubt that would ultimately redirect my life.

Out of desperation, I turned to a holistic doctor who specialized in autoimmune diseases—and within two weeks, I had real answers. Through detailed testing, he discovered I had Hashimoto’s, a thyroid-related autoimmune condition that is incredibly common in women. The contrast was staggering: more than a year with MDs and DOs had left me without answers, but one holistic doctor listened, dug deeper, and uncovered the truth in a matter of weeks. That was the turning point for me. I realized I no longer wanted to become an MD or DO. Instead, I wanted to pursue health in a way that got to the root cause rather than masking symptoms. My passion for holistic health and natural remedies was born right then and there.

From that moment, I began researching relentlessly—studying both man-made and natural ingredients, questioning the products on store shelves, and searching for truly clean alternatives. When I couldn’t find a skincare line that aligned with my values of whole-body health, I began crafting my own. That personal journey became the foundation of Lotte Naturals, a brand built on integrity, non-toxic ingredients, and the belief that what you put on your skin should nourish your body as much as what you put inside it. Looking back, what once felt like a difficult, painful chapter in my life became the very reason I chose this path—and the reason Lotte Naturals exists today.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Like many business owners, I’ve had moments where doubt crept in and I wondered if I should just give up. For me, that moment came after the birth of my third child at age 32. At the time, I already had two little ones—just five and three years old—and had launched my business about a year and a half earlier. Between the demands of motherhood and the slow pace of early growth, I questioned if I should put my dream aside and focus solely on raising my children. But motherhood has a way of igniting an inner strength—it makes you feel like a superwoman—and in that realization, I knew I couldn’t walk away.

Instead of letting those doubts define me, I chose to let them fuel me. If I could be a mother of three and start a business, then I could absolutely grow that business too. In fact, my children became the very reason I pressed forward, and they inspired me to expand Lotte Naturals with a baby and kids line. What could have been a setback instead became a source of motivation, reminding me that even in the chaos of motherhood, there is incredible power to create, grow, and succeed.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
When I think about the biggest lies in the skin and hair care industry, it’s hard to know where to begin. For decades, companies have brainwashed consumers with flashy marketing on the front of their bottles—claims of vitamin E, shea butter, or other nourishing ingredients—while hiding a cocktail of toxins on the back. Flip the label, and you’ll often find a laundry list of harsh preservatives, synthetic dyes, and artificial fragrances that outweigh the good. The truth is, many of these ingredients have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and even mood imbalances, yet the industry continues to push them under the guise of beauty and “prevention.” What’s worse is that they fail to educate people on the fact that our skin is our largest organ, absorbing 70–80% of what we put on it directly into our bloodstream. That, to me, is one of the greatest betrayals in modern beauty.

With Lotte Naturals, I’ve made it my mission to flip that script. We don’t hide ingredients—we proudly list every single one, because transparency and honesty are at the core of what we do. Every formula is created with nutrient-rich, non-toxic ingredients that support whole-body health rather than compromise it. When I talk with people at events or connect with customers who are just starting to realize how much we’ve all been misled, it fuels my drive even more. Change is hard, but it’s happening—and I believe the world is finally waking up to the truth about what’s really in their products and how much better clean, fresh skincare can be.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
It’s funny how life works out. From the time I was six years old until my early teens, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian because I loved animals and wanted to help them. Eventually, that dream shifted toward human medicine, partly because I thought I’d feel more fulfilled helping people, and if I’m being honest, partly because I knew human doctors made more money. I was accepted into medical school, but personal health struggles completely changed my path. After years of frustration with traditional medicine, I discovered holistic health and realized I no longer wanted to be an MD or DO. Instead, I pursued my business and science degrees and followed a new passion—launching a completely clean, non-toxic skincare company.

With Lotte Naturals, I still get to do exactly what I always wanted: help people. But now I help them in a different, deeply meaningful way—through products that not only make them look and feel confident on the outside but also support their health on the inside. Every product is crafted with integrity, free of hormone disruptors, carcinogens, and toxic fillers. I’ve had so many people reach out to tell me how much Lotte Naturals has impacted their lives and begged me never to stop creating these products. And I won’t. I truly believe I am right where I’m supposed to be, and the future of Lotte Naturals is only going to grow as we expand into even more areas of clean living.
