We recently had the chance to connect with Paula Johnson Neal and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Paula, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
“It’s not about who gives me knowledge, but what—and for me, that’s the Bible.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Paula Johnson Neal, a children’s book author based in Columbus, Ohio. I create relatable, interactive, and joyful stories that inspire children to be kinder to themselves and others—while nurturing a lifelong love of reading.
My published titles include:
I’m Gonna Have A Good Day
Breathe, Gabby, Breathe
Gabby Meets Kindness (my most recent release)
I’m currently working on my next book: Zachariah’s Rescue Adventures!—an exciting new story filled with love, admiration, imagination, and celebration!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mother recently passed away. When it comes to my work, she was my greatest teacher—instilling in me the attitude of hustle, discipline, creativity, organization, and pride. She shaped not only how I approach my career, but also how I show up in the world. Her influence is woven into everything I do!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“Girl, you already have everything within you to be successful in all parts of your life. Damn, show yourself grace! Lighten the hell up! Chase joy and laugh until your belly aches!”
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The outside world will always change. But my core values—those that uphold the belief in the humanity of myself and others—remain constant.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’ve been fortunate enough to pursue what I was born to do—and continue doing it. No one has ever dictated my path. From childhood, those around me always believed that whatever I chose in life, I’d excel. Ironically, the only person who’s placed limits on me… is me. Preparation is the key to unlocking my self-imposed limitations.
