Carsyn Todd of Columbus on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Carsyn Todd and have shared our conversation below.

Carsyn , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: When was the last time you felt true joy?
The last time I felt true joy was when I went to visit my family out of town. It felt so nice to just be together and not have to worry about anything else—no homework, no chores, no schedules—just us. We played games, told funny stories, had a fashion show, and laughed until our cheeks hurt. I didn’t want it to end because it reminded me how much I love being around the people who know me best.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Carsyn Todd, and I’m the author of Young Heroes, Big Hearts. I wrote this because I kept seeing a lot of unkindness and thought, “Why can’t the world be kinder?” My journal is all about giving back and spreading kindness every week for a whole year, so it starts to just be something you do without even thinking about it. I hope it inspires people to look up from their phones, notice the people around them, and find little ways to make a difference every day.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Someone who saw me before I saw myself was definitely my mom. She’s never given up on me and has always supported me in everything I do. She makes me feel powerful and confident, and I know I wouldn’t be the same person without her. I’m so lucky to have her in my life.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
This is a hard question, but I think I stopped hiding my pain and started using it as my power when I realized it’s better to face what’s going on—whether it’s good or bad—than to pretend it’s not there. I’ve learned that struggles and hurts can actually help you grow, teach you things, and even give you the chance to help other people going through the same thing.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me and the real me are kind of the same but also different. I’m still kind and friendly in both, but in public, I’m a little calmer. When I’m with people who really know me, I’m usually dancing, singing, doing handstands, or just being totally goofy.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as that kind girl who was always there for everyone—the one who would cheer you up, have your back, and probably make you laugh with something silly.
