Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kathy Vogel of Akron

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kathy Vogel. Check out our conversation below.

Kathy, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Speaking publicly about my faith. It’s something you are not supposed to do when you’re in the entertainment business. While I don’t speak about it during my radio show, I do speak about my faith on my other platforms. I feel we’re in a place in our human history where people are seeking and needing hope. It’s my responsibility as a Christian to share that hope.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a radio personality, voice over artist, and freelance writer. I wear many hats! I’m currently heard on the classic rock station 97.5 WONE in Akron, OH from 3-7 pm. I’m a freelance writer for Compass Ohio. I’ve written award-winning screenplays. I launched the lifestyle brand Enduring Olive– a resource for women over 40– in 2023. And a few months ago, I wrote my first book– Through the Storm: Hearing God’s Voice Through Life’s Tempests. It’s a Top 100 Best-Seller, and I couldn’t be more thrilled at the lives this book has touched.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve worked hard to be the person God has told me I am. I am His. I am worthy. I am worthwhile. What I do matters. If I were to look at myself through the lens of the world, it would see a middle-aged woman who should be put out to pasture. If I had let the world shape me in the beginning of my career, I would be a subservient woman with a small voice and limited mindset and a belief that I should accept whatever was given me and to stifle any ambition. Do not let the world tell you who you should be.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You are perfect just the way YOU are. Truly.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Completely. One of my pet peeves is a disingenuous person. As a radio personality, all I have is my name, my identity, my authenticity. I will not say I like something if I don’t. I won’t lie to a listener or fabricate a tale merely for entertainment sake. The person you meet in person is the person you get on-air. I don’t have the energy or desire to create a facade.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes. I was fortunate to have parents that would’ve loved if I had become a doctor or a lawyer, but they always gave me the grace and space to decide my career path. I was always a talker, always enjoyed music and sharing stories. So being in the entertainment field is the best use of my God-given abilities. Some people do not enjoy what they do for a living. I am blessed to enjoy what I do.
