Daily Inspiration: Meet Michael Marhefka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Marhefka.

Hi Michael, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It’s funny really, to sit and reflect on my business and how it began. Hard to imagine almost a decade has gone by… what started as a desire to start a clothing business that donated profits back to Destiny Rescue (an anti trafficking organization) lead me overseas where I fell in love with photography. Beyond loving the adventure of travel, I was obsessed with the thought that you can capture site, smell, taste, and feel all in a still image. I look back now at those iPhone pictures and still think of how they are some of my favorite photos I have ever captured. I have come a long way since then and photography has taken me on countless adventures. From my first photo trip to Thailand where it all began, to Kent State to pursue studio photography degree, interrupted school to do professional wedding photography, and eventually travel wedding photography going from state to state. This lead to directing creative styled shoots and founding a creative collaborative of photographers in North East Ohio that helped educate and inspire creatives of all levels. And then finally now, film photography. Film had slowly been introduced to me starting in 2022 and has since become all I photograph. Weddings are booked on occasion and projects are often pitched and turned down. Personal endeavors using film become my obsession. The tactile nature of photographing using a camera with no batteries, developing the images and creating prints is wildly rewarding and creates an extreme sense of connection to the work you are creating and it is simply beautiful. 2026 will be my year to share what I’ve learned and loved about film with the world and hopefully find clients and projects that align with my desire to be present and help others find presence in their own lives through photography.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has never been a smooth road for me… perhaps it is my personality to find the most difficult paths forward or maybe more accurately it is my visionary mind that doesn’t allow me to take the road more traveled. I am a passionate creative, and with that passion I find and have found myself in the highs and lows of the next big idea and the practical next steps to get there. After about 8 years of non-stop creating I found myself moving to a new state looking for new views and a new appreciation for what creating can look like… for me. I found myself asking if it could be sustainable. If it could be stable. If it could be curated and customized to fit my life and my world – not the world of others. And so without social media, or finding clients online (because I hate interacting in those spaces) I simply stopped. And with that so did the flow of money. And for two years I sat with no projects. No timelines. No contracts. And by God’s grace my wife and I were able to sustain this choice. But now, post my two year sabbatical, I find myself craving to create. I am longing to see envision a project and see it come to life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in photography and even more niche(ly) I specialize in film photography. I am most proud of my choice to only say “yes” to projects and clients that truly speak to me. Projects that uniquely juxtapose humanness and artfulness.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am new to Akron, though I am not new to North East Ohio, but I really love the passion people in Akron have for their city. Almost every person I interact with seems to care deeply about their neighborhoods. I have yet to explore or see much in regards to Akron’s art/creative scene. I do dislike that they do not seem to have any kind of film labs or stores.
