Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Umansky.
Hi Jeremy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in the Cleveland area. Growing up, my grandmother, a kosher caterer, was a huge influence and inspiration on me. By the time I was 12 I was already working in the kitchen with her.
I went to culinary school in NY where I met my wife and business partner Allie. During this time I worked a chef, farmer, forager, and on food system safety and security. After spending some more years doing this work in NYC Allie and I decided to move to Cleveland where we eventually opened up Larder Delicatessen & Bakery.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road is smooth and that’s exactly why traveling them is so much fun! As a small business owner the roads I travel are filled with potholes and debris, I’m constantly dealing with one issue after another. The satisfaction is in surmounting each issue so that I can keep trekking along.
As you know, we’re big fans of Larder Delicatessen & Bakery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a Jewish Delicatessen special if in old world styles of charcuterie and pickle making. We produce everything that we use on site and source our ingredients locally.
What does success mean to you?
Every time that someone tells me that they enjoy my food I celebrate that as a success. I reflect more on small intimate moments of enjoying delicious food rather than the accumulation of successes over time.
