Inspiring Conversations with Shy Chubb of The Shy Effect

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shy Chubb.

Hi Shy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into the beauty industry didn’t start with a plan, it started with curiosity and creativity, way before I ever dreamed of becoming a professional makeup artist or licensed esthetician, in fact I always wanted to be teacher growing up. As a little girl, I’d wait for my mom to leave the room so I could sneak into her makeup bag. I was fascinated by the colors, the brushes, the way something so small could make someone feel completely different. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was discovering the power of transformation.

As I got older, makeup became more than just fun, it became a form of confidence and connection. I grew up not always feeling accepted, but when I wore makeup, I felt seen. People would compliment me, ask how I did certain looks, and soon enough, I was doing makeup for friends and family. Helping people feel beautiful came naturally to me, and it gave me something I had been missing: a way to connect, to uplift, and to express myself creatively.

Now, with over 10 years of experience, I specialize in bridal beauty and skincare. I travel for love, whether that’s a destination wedding or an intimate hometown ceremony. I love being part of someone’s most special day, and I don’t take that privilege lightly.

I’m proud of what I’ve built. Not just the brand but the fact that I never gave up. I’ve faced doubts, just like anyone would, but I didn’t let them stop me. I kept going, and I stayed rooted in what I knew was possible. The clients who work with me often say they feel comfortable, understood, and fully confident putting their trust in me. They appreciate my honesty and my eye for detail, and I’m honored to be someone they count on.

Right now, I don’t have a crystal-clear future vision. I’m focused on the present on delivering exceptional service, continuing to grow, and letting my path unfold one step at a time. I trust that being fully present now will create the future I’m meant for. As a child, I always dreamed of being a teacher, standing in front of a classroom, sharing what I knew.
Now, I realize I am a teacher, just in a different way. Whether I’m guiding clients through their skincare journey or giving makeup lessons, I’m still teaching, helping others feel confident, educated, and empowered in their own skin.
It’s a reminder that your childhood dreams can evolve into something even more meaningful than you imagined.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first official job in the beauty industry was at a corporate salon. I started at the front desk as a receptionist, and after I graduated and got my esthetics license, I was offered a service provider role. It was a great place to gain client experience, but if I’m honest, it didn’t shape me. The jobs that really taught me the value of care, connection, and customer experience were the ones that came before: working in restaurants as a server and supporting patients as an optometric technician. That’s where I learned how to really listen, how to pay attention to people’s needs, and how to deliver service with heart.

Eventually, I hit a turning point. I had clients at the salon, yes. I had marketing support, yes. But I also had a voice inside me saying, “You’re meant to build your own thing.” I didn’t have a full business plan. I didn’t have a cushion. But I had a vision, a work ethic, and belief in my own potential and I took the leap

As you know, we’re big fans of The Shy Effect . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When it came time to name my business, I didn’t want something trendy or surface-level. I wanted something that represented the impact I had on people. Over the years, I started hearing the same feedback over and over again: that there was something special about the way I made people feel. Whether it was a facial that left someone glowing and relaxed or a makeup application that gave a bride the confidence she didn’t know she needed, it was more than just a service. That’s how The Shy Effect was born because there’s a shift that happens when people sit in my chair or lay on my table. I wanted my brand to reflect that.

When I left the corporate salon, I kept most of my service offerings. Why? Because I truly love doing them all. From bridal makeup and facials to waxing, lash lifts, dermaplaning, spray tans, and more. I believe in offering a full-circle experience. And I never stop evolving. When I’m not with clients, I’m working behind the scenes: answering emails, building systems, refining my website, and always thinking about how to improve what I offer. I’m always working, even when I’m not “working.”

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you’re thinking about starting a business, do it. Don’t wait until everything feels perfect or you have every step figured out. I started The Shy Effect with no business plan, no funding, and no idea how it would unfold. What I did have was a vision, drive, and belief in my potential. That’s what carried me.

You’re going to face fear. You’ll have doubts. You might feel like an imposter at times. But if you’re passionate, go for it anyway. Take the leap. No one will ever understand your dream the way you do, and that’s okay. You don’t need everyone’s approval. You just need to bet on yourself.

There will be challenges, slow seasons, and moments when quitting feels easier. But if you stay focused, keep showing up, and stay rooted in why you started—you’ll build something real. You’ll attract the right people. You’ll evolve.

Most importantly: start messy, stay genuine, and never lose the heart behind your hustle.
Your future self will thank you.
