Conversations with William Fernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Fernandez.

William Fernandez

Hi William, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After successfully hitting my lowest point through years of drug and alcohol addiction, I found myself in a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. From there I got a sponsor and worked the 12 step program. I have stayed sober ever since. Around this time I started a new music project called “Bluto”. It is a heavy sludge metal band that lyrically touches on themes of addiction, guilt, self hate, and ultimately overcoming obstacles and hardships in life. Initially meant to be a solo project that only posted music online, I was quickly joined by Reece Mercer (Guitar) and Robert Fernandez (Bass). Having this creative outlet during early sobriety was so important to me. This means of expression has played a huge part in my success. We have been playing gigs all around the Cleveland music scene since 2024.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Dealing with addiction is never easy. I’ve seen it in others and many have seen me fight this battle as well. I have found the best chance at success in sobriety is working with others who have dealt with addiction first hand.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started playing drums at age 11 and started my first band with my brother at age 14. Music has since consumed my life and I couldn’t be happier about it. I remember at a very young age, before I ever even picked up a pair of drumsticks, telling my peers at school that I was a drummer because I just knew I was going to do this. In my current project “Bluto” I take on the role of the drummer and also lead vocalist. You don’t see drummer vocalists often and I think it sets us apart from other bands.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I enjoy the podcast “The Trapset”. It is an interview style podcast that features famous drummers and how they got their start and their life prior to any success as a musician.
