Today we’d like to introduce you to David Cain.
Hi David, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I taught myself to juggle when I was 12 years old and began performing professionally two years later. In my early 20s, I won my first of sixteen world championship gold medals and started setting world records. I’ve performed on cruise ships, at amusement parks, and in circuses, theaters, schools, libraries, retirement communities, and just about everywhere else you can think of. My main focus is performing in churches as the Juggler For Jesus, teaching the Bible and presenting the gospel through my juggling. I’ve been doing that ministry for about 27 years. I’ve also done quite a bit of work on television, including appearances on America’s Got Talent, The Today Show, The CBS Sunday Morning Show, The Gong Show, America’s Funniest People, and World’s Greatest Performers. While I live in Southwest Ohio, I perform all over the country and around the world. I’ve appeared in the Guinness World Records Book and worked as the opening act for many famous bands and singers. In addition to being a world class juggler, I’m also a professional magician, a multi-instrumentalist musician, singer, and composer. I’ve also written 27 books that have been published. You might say that I’m a true Renaissance Man.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My professional journey has been fairly smooth. I feel quite blessed with the opportunities that I’ve been given. Being a traveling performer can be a very lonely life, so there have certainly been sacrifices that I’ve had to make. As I get older, the travel has become more and more of a burden. I often say that my ideal job would be doing exactly what I’m doing now, but the audiences would come to me rather than me traveling to them!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I perform traditional juggling with balls, rings, clubs, and swords as well as performing ball spinning, lasso tricks, plate spinning, indoor boomerangs, Chinese yo-yo, balancing, and other related skills. I’m a comedy juggler, so I’m talking and telling jokes throughout my routines. And if I’m doing my Christian ministry, I’m integrating the Biblical messages into each routine as well. I’m considered the most versatile juggler in the world and I’m proud to have 6 hours of material that I can perform. This really sets me apart from pretty much every other juggler in the world. And the juggling ministry is also fairly unique.
What makes you happy?
Many elements of my job make me happy. I often say that I have a wonderful job because I get to play with toys and tell people about Jesus. What could be better than that? I do love seeing the look of wonder in the eyes of the audience when they see something new or something they never imagined would be possible. The realization that I’ve been able to do this professionally for over four decades also makes me happy. Few people get to live out their childhood dreams, but I have.
