Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Hamer.
Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Rich Maurer and I are the co-founders of Crash Cat Media Group, a motion picture development and production company focused on bold, cinematic storytelling across both documentary and narrative formats. Our creative partnership began over 20 years ago when I was working at an ad agency and met Rich, who was a recording engineer at a local audio studio. What started as a professional collaboration quickly turned into a lasting friendship and a dynamic creative alliance. Since then, we’ve traveled the globe together producing award-winning content—uncovering untold stories and crafting powerful films that connect with audiences around the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about this industry is a smooth road—but that’s exactly what makes it so exciting. Every day brings a new challenge to solve. As an independent film production company, we don’t have the luxury of throwing money at problems—we have to be resourceful and creative. Being filmmakers in the Midwest and running a business means wearing a lot of hats—all the hats, really. But that’s part of the thrill. Rich and I genuinely enjoy the challenge of figuring things out, whether it’s cracking a story beat in a screenplay or navigating the logistics and strategy behind a complex production. The obstacles are real, but so is the satisfaction of building something from the ground up.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Crash Cat Media Group, we produce feature documentaries and scripted narratives with a hands-on, Midwestern grit—we’re not afraid to get our hands dirty to get the job done right. Rich is a sound guru and I’m the visual guy, and together we make a great team. We both bring different strengths to the table, and that balance helps us approach every project from a full-spectrum creative lens.
We specialize in telling stories that are emotionally resonant, visually bold, and grounded in real human experience. We’re known for being resourceful and committed—on a recent production, we filmed in the middle of nowhere without power or running water for days and still pulled it off using just the batteries in our packs. That kind of adaptability is a big part of who we are.
We have a growing slate of original films in development and production, and we’re equally passionate about helping other storytellers bring their visions to life. Whether it’s shepherding someone else’s idea through production or developing our own, we’re all in. Most recently, we’ve started adapting our screenplays into novels and serving as the publisher ourselves to get the content to market—giving each story multiple ways to reach an audience.
What we’re most proud of isn’t just the work—it’s how we work. Rich and I believe in being honest, fair, and real with everyone we collaborate with. We’re here to tell unique stories that connect with people—but even more importantly, we want to tell them in an ethical way. Our goal is always to uplift, not tear down. Because when you put others first and do what you can to lift them up, it’s amazing what can happen. That’s the heart of what sets us apart.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
We are absolutely risk takers. Nothing good happens without some sort of risk—haha. In film production, there’s a risk to take every single day. Should we take on this project? Should we travel there? Should we invest our own money and resources to produce this film? Should I sit in the poison ivy to get the perfect shot? (Yes, that actually happened.) The truth is, if something doesn’t carry some level of risk, it probably isn’t worth doing.
As independent filmmakers, risk is baked into everything we do. From self-financing a passion project to shooting in unpredictable environments with limited resources, we’ve learned to embrace the uncertainty. Risk, to us, is really about believing in the outcome enough to move forward despite the unknowns. That’s where growth happens—and that’s where the best stories come from.
Taking smart, calculated risks is part of how we’ve been able to carve out our place in the industry. And honestly, it keeps things exciting.
