Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelle Sloan.
Hi Chelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was a journalist for 15 years before leaving the industry in 2019 to get my Master’s degree because I wanted to get into teaching. However, those plans changed as in the midst of getting my Master’s, the pandemic hit. Now, also during this time, I started writing my debut novel. It was more of a thing to do say I did it, and maybe it might become a side hustle/hobby for me. Now, nearly five years later and 16 books, I’m now a full-time author. Needless to say, things changed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Never. And I don’t think it’s supposed to be. As a self-published author, you are learning about the industry and yourself every day and with every book. There were the early struggles of learning how to just write a book and what went into self-publishing. Then after that, there’s the struggles of learning how to level up your business. There are struggles every day of making sure you stay current and on trend while also writing books and stories that mean something to you. It’s always an evolution and if it ever got easy, then I’m probably doing something wrong.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a contemporary romance author. My stories are romantic comedies set in the world of sports or small towns. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m able to keep a book light and feel good, while also making you get sucked into the stories of the characters, so much so that you want to live in the towns or the worlds I’ve created.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Corinne Michaels was my first mentor. My debut was part of a project she was spear heading, and she took me under her wing and I owe so much to her. The indie author world is a tight knit group where we all lean on each other daily, knowing that we work alone and most of the time have no one in our “real lives” that we can talk to. I love the space we’ve created in that regard.
