Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Hahn.
Hi Monique , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in Los Angeles where I went to a tiny little school called “M.U.D,” (Makeup Designory) which grew to the now prestigious school it is today. It was in 1999 I graduated, a time when the internet was new, so I did a lot of “hitting the pavement,” to make connections. I believe I used the LA 411 book to “cold call” photographers, production managers, fellow makeup artists, film school students at USC, photography students at Pasadena Art Center, you name it, and told them I would be interested in assisting, working with them, and starting out my career. I made some connections to work some and build a resume and portfolio.. I put my listing up for any production type site such as Mandy.com, or any that existed at the time. The more I worked, the more connections I made and so on and started making some momentum. I was able to then work enough to feel like I actually finally had a career in the entertainment industry. It honestly felt like more work trying to find work than working for a time, but then more calls would come in and I didn’t have to make as many cold calls, but I did constantly remind people I met that “I’m still out here” if they needed me.
After I had my son in 2007, things slowed down for me and I moved to Ohio to pursue the budding film industry in Cleveland. I worked on some independent films,,but also films like Draft Day and Avengers. Yet the majority of work in Ohio has been wedding based. The most consistent work I get is a regular trans client and I couldn’t be happier.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggle has always been trying to find work or waiting for the call to come in, which is the way of a freelancer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would say that I specialize in beauty and airbrushed makeup. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I don’t mind doing makeup for Transgender.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I had some mentors early on that would use me as an assistant and then refer work to me, which was always an honor. One name that stands out is Elizabeth Dahl and another is Robin Slater. They helped me succeed in my career by giving me the opportunities and the encouragement to help me blossom into my own free standing makeup artist.
