Conversations with Tara Custer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Custer.

Hi Tara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I help brow-challenged Motherpluckers feel fabulous through microblading and permanent makeup.

Like many of us, I spent high school in a toxic relationship—with my tweezers. After years of uneven brow battles and filling them in daily like it was a full-time job, I finally invested in microblading. It was life-changing—and not just for my face. I became obsessed with the art, got certified, and knew this was how I wanted to help people.

In case you’re wondering: microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique where tiny hair-like strokes are added to your brows to make them look fuller, beautifully shaped, and basically like you were born that way. It’s like a brow lift without the drama.

Before launching Baby Got Brows, I actually came from a creative world—degrees in Fashion, Marketing, and Sales, and a career in freelance design while wrangling three wild and wonderful kids from home. That background in aesthetics, branding, and multitasking definitely helped when I decided to start my own business.

Today, I help people feel confident, polished, and a little bit powerful—one custom brow at a time. Whether you’ve got no brows, patchy ones, or are recovering from a previous brow-trauma (we don’t name names, but you know who you are), I got you.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth road? Girl, no. I started my permanent makeup training while working from home with two toddlers—and, because I love chaos—pregnant with my third.

I’d wake up at 5 a.m. to train, practice, work, cry (sometimes all at once), then dive into the mom-life marathon. I managed to finish my coursework, but my belly was so big I physically couldn’t complete the hands-on portion.

Once I settled into life with three tiny humans, I started tattooing brows late at night on my very very patient and supportive friends and family. Eventually, I earned my certification in January 2020… just in time for the world to shut down.

Let’s just say permanent makeup didn’t exactly make the “essential services” list. I hit pause on clients and shifted to remote school, snacks on snacks, and surviving. Thankfully, I still had my freelance design work, and I used that time to keep learning, practicing, and perfecting my craft.

Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those slower days for anything. It was challenging, yes—but it gave me space to grow as an artist, a business owner, and a mom. And let’s be honest, if I could learn to microblade through a pandemic with three kids under five, I can do just about anything!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My goal is for no one to know you had your brows done—I want people to just stare at you wondering, “Why does she look so good?!” That’s the sweet spot.

Most of my Brow Babes come in saying the same thing: “I want them to look natural.” So that means no Groucho Marx, Frida Kahlo, or Angry Bird situations on my watch. I’ve spent years perfecting the art of creating hyper-realistic brows that look like actual hair—even when there isn’t any.

What really sets my work apart is the subtlety, the customization, and the genuine care I pour into every single client. I map every brow to your unique features—it’s never one-shape-fits-all. But beyond the technique, what I didn’t expect was just how powerful this work can be.

I’ve had the absolute honor of working with some incredible women—many of whom have experienced hair loss from cancer treatments, alopecia, or other conditions. Some sessions are filled with laughs and bad jokes, others with tears of joy. Those moments remind me that this isn’t just beauty—it’s healing, empowerment, and a little magic, all rolled into one set of brows.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Yes—two words: just start. You’ll never feel 100% ready, your hand will shake, your confidence will waver, and you’ll probably cry over fake skin more than once. It’s fine. That’s part of it.

There’s so much pressure to be “perfect” right out of the gate, but the truth is, this is a skill that takes serious time, reps, and patience to master. Don’t rush the process. Be a sponge, stay coachable, and get really comfortable being uncomfortable.

Also—take way more photos and videos than you think you need. Trust me, your future self (and Instagram feed) will thank you.

And finally, surround yourself with people who cheer you on, let you practice on their faces, and remind you why you started when imposter syndrome creeps in. Your dream clients are out there—they just need to see your magic.
