Life & Work with Kathryn Cuevas of Amherst

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Cuevas.

Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After attending a University out of high school to pursue a career in Fashion, I realized I wanted more of a creative field than corporate. My roommate at the time inspired me to look at beauty school. I presented a PowerPoint presentation for my parents to show them my vision in this decision to leave college and gain their support, luckily that did the trick! I finished out my freshman year and started at Brown Aveda Institute fall of 2016.
I was motivated to expand my knowledge on color theory and guest experience. I finished beauty school in just 10 months, working at two high end salons in their training programs during beauty school and after graduating, soaking up all I could.
After obtaining my cosmetology license and training at my first salon, my now husband and I found we were expecting our first daughter. To have more flexibility with my hours working around my husband’s work schedule, I started renting my own chair and have been booth renting since 2017. I especially love the balance it offers with my now three children, having control of my schedule to be home with them during the day, while still getting to connect with woman and help them feel their best.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It takes perseverance and dedication to always be furthering your skills in this industry. Especially jumping to booth rental as early into my career as I did. While having my three children, building up a clientele, and practicing my craft- it took a lot of time management and self motivation. It’s all up to you as an independent contractor to further education, study color lines, and be up to date with the latest techniques. This industry is constantly evolving, but that’s where the creative side can bloom if you apply the tools out there to stay educated.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self employed hairstylist of seven years, specializing in lived-in color, short bobs, and long layered cuts. I love when my clients see their new hair color and say “it looks so natural”. It is my favorite to create soft blends in hair color so it grows out smoothly for months, making it low maintenance but feeling high end. It is important to me to fulfill every guests vision who sits in my chair. I love to offer hair care tips and routines, making sure my clients know how to keep the salon results between visits.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Lived-In color is trending now more than ever. Embracing your natural color as your base, and complimenting highlights around your face with intentional placement throughout, helps your color feel like a natural balayage from the sun, allowing room for months between appointments for toning and trimming maintenance.
‘Ghost Waves’ are also the latest trend in the beauty world, off of the beach wave styling. Ghost Waves are a very relaxed and soft, “barely there” curl styling. A larger 2” curling iron, alternating curl patterns, and locking in with a texture spray, will help bring this look to life.
