Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Nelson.
Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We began our business out of desperation. David had been laid off from his job in 2010 and had multiple surgeries in 2011 and 12. I was a stay at home mom of four. One day while he was recovering from back surgery he suggested taking his mom’s famously delicious donuts to a local farmers market.
After staying up until 2 am cooking 400 donuts we took them, unannounced to the Granville Farmers Market.
We sold out in 2 hours.
We are so thankful to David’s grandparents whose namesake we used for our company and for their legacy on entrepreneurship.. Bailey’s Drive Inn was once a 1950’s drive inn in southern Ohio.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our business journey has really been fairly smooth. We gradually applied for more farmers markets each season and were welcomed into a few local coffeehouses. The greatest challenge was probably Covid when we pivoted to Saturday morning deliveries and had a three month stint at Cameron Mitchell’s Bud Dairy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bailey’s Drive Inn Donuts?
We have a simple business philosophy. Make a great product and have great customer service. We make around ten flavors of giant donut holes, from lemon glazed to our most popular cinnamon sugar. Our recipe is a guarded secret and we are most proud of the quality of our product and the family history and participation.
This year we will be at four local farmers markets; Dublin and Worthington on Saturday morning, andJohnstown, Gahanna and New Albany during the week. Our donuts are also available at all River Road Coffeehouse locations.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
We love Columbus. It is the best Midwest city and the only place I have ever lived where as soon as you move in people consider you to be “one of them”. We love the food scene, the art scene and of course the Buckeye Football scene!
What do we dislike? That 270 71 interchange could be easier.
