Life & Work with Gideon General of Dayton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gideon General.

Hi Gideon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before I became a content creator I was already working professionally as a chef for 6 years. I graduated from Sinclair with a degree in Culinary arts and hospitality management. I had a dream of reimagining and modernizing Filipino cuisine and becoming the youngest chef to ever get 3 Michelin stars. All that has changed when I started making content during the pandemic. I had no intent of taking content creation seriously at first, I only did it out of pure boredom since the restaurant I was working at closed for a month due to the pandemic. Luckily, my 2nd video went viral on TikTok and had momentum early on. That pushed me to make content atleast once a week while I was still working full time as a chef. After a year of making content part-time, I made the decision to go full time. After that, BuzzFeed reached out and offered a chance to be one of their “Talent Residents” and I ended up getting chosen for the position after a series of auditions. Worked for them for 2.5 years and recently quit last November to focus on my own brand.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say my start was definitely very smooth since I had early momentum with my 2nd video going viral. But many videos after that were flops but I always said to myself “If I did it before, I can most definitely do it again”. Creative burnout is also a thing. There are days where I am very creative with new ideas coming non-stop and there are days where my mind goes blank.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a certified chef and a full time content creator. I specialize in approachable restaurant quality dishes you can make at home. I am most proud of the fact that I built my business and career by myself. Didnt have to rely on anyone but my creativity and perseverance. Obviously the amazing support from my family and friends gave me strength and courage to keep pursuing this career of mine. I am also working on starting my own streetwear clothing brand.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my creativity and skill to back that creativity is most important. I continuously push myself to improve my skills and learn new techniques so I can consistently show my audience cool new things. Also having thick skin is key when it comes to social media.
