Daily Inspiration: Meet Marshall Hull

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marshall Hull.

Hi Marshall, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been music driven. Coming from a small town I didn’t have as many opportunities to do the things I wanted to do with it. So, I stayed in my room listening to music, learning as much as I could on my own and crafting what I would like to become. Eventually after making a few different bands that had their own life span and moving to the Cincinnati, Oh area I made Marz Hall as a way to make my own music on my own terms. Marz Hall has branched out into what it has become today through all the trails and errors and most important still has the same love and passion it had when I started doing music. Music that I want to write and put out that I love, stories that I have been through and things I want to share with the world because it has helped me. I believe it can help others as well. Music has done that for me and I want to give back that same feeling.

So Marz Hall is me and I am Marz Hall. It’s the most authentic thing I believe I can do musically and I’ve got a lot of comments saying that it shows. So that makes me very happy. I’m excited for the future.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Shewwww.. where do I begin? Lol

It’s not been a smooth road at all. Without dumping out too much dirty laundry.. music itself and working with other musicians is like a full time relationship. It’s hard to find something that fits completely forever. Wether that’s how things are operated, people you work with, your own daily struggles you have to do deal with.. there’s just so much that goes into being a musician that’s trying to do more than just play when you feel like it. When you have a band like Green Day it’s a beautiful thing. Three people that have been playing music for over 30 years together is almost unimaginable. Even just in a personal level. Its something that we should all strive for but realistic in todays world, you gotta do what you can when there’s so many outside factors.

So between making connections, proving you’re worth the time of the promoters, venues, other musicians or whoever you need to work with. It’s a process. Unless you have a bunch of money to flash around but then I feel like it wouldn’t even feel like an accomplishment at the end of the day. It’s just a constant grind and even the best of us get completely burnt out sometimes of trying our best and feel like you’re falling short still. So, you gotta be in it for the heart, the love of the music and the passion that got you started in the first place. Music has always been a safe space for me and that’s what keeps me going.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer / songwriter known as Marz Hall. In this project I do pretty much all the song writing at this point. I sing, write the lyrics, guitar, piano, bass.. most things involved except for drums. I can’t do that. I also always have friends around that help me along the way. I have my buddy Sam Mills now doing drums for me, my good friend Ben Allen writing the lead guitar parts and snazzing it up. I work with a few different producers that really bring my vision to life. Just produced an amazing song called “Pleasure” with my good friend Garrett Crider from a band called Trauma Illinois(check them out) and currently working on a full length record with Chikah Washington(DJ Chinx). I’m super excited for that and we are a few songs in and we have a single lined out I wrote called “Keep Walking” that will be out later this year.

I would say that as an artist one thing that I’ve always been complimented for is my authentic personality. I really try to write my songs from a first person point of few and put myself right in the center of the song. I want the listener to really know and understand the lyrics especially from the emotion in the vocals to the words that they’re hearing along with the sonics of the music. It’s something that I feel is very important as a musician because that’s is what helped me growing up is music where the artist put themselves on the front line of their music. As I said earlier, I really just want to give back to the world what I was given through music. It’s the one gift that keeps on giving. So, other than that setting me apart I’d like to say that the music I write is also very different. It’s almost like blending punk / soft rock and folk. That’s what the upcoming record vibes are giving me and I’m really excited to share it with everyone. I’m very proud to be able to write the music I have, it’s the best I’ve written and I am constantly getting better and loving the songs more. I’m proud to play the stages I play and the other artist and musicians I share the stage with. I love the little community I’ve come into and feel like I’ve helped created. I’d like to give a big thank you to Frank Hulefeld from Madison Theater, Courtney Phenicie of CincyMusic, Kevin McNamee, Zack Prost and others who has really helped out this journey of Marz Hall.

Also, the biggest thank you to everyone who supports me and helps me keep growing as an artist to keep playing bigger stages with bigger opportunities. Without the support of everyone, it wouldn’t be possible. I think that’s what I’m the most proud of is having so much support. Thank you!

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory.. is literally the turning point that changed my life. There was this kid in my class my 7th grade year. He was in need of money and had this HUGE book of CD’s. Everyone carried around CD players back then(the iPod literally came out the next year, I still feel old tho). He told me if I had 5 dollars to give him, I could have any CD in the book. I luckily had 5 dollars on me and I was flipping through all the disc. I stumbled upon a gold CD, with an explosion and rockets in a black outline saying Green Day on top. It was their record “Dookie” and I chose that one not even ever hearing of them before. As soon as I heard the opening of “Burnout” with the drums coming in and Billie Joes vocals and guitar blaring through. I had no doubt in my mind. I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE BILLIE JOE FROM GREEN DAY. So, that’s what I’ve set my life out to be like. I started playing guitar and singing and writing songs. It was a turning point in my life I’ll never forget.

Non music related favorite memory was finding out Pokémon exists and I’m still a Pokémon Master till this day. Lol
