Check Out Jon Sherman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Sherman.

Hi Jon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved from New York City fourteen years ago to take a teaching job at Kenyon College in Gambier. I was an independent filmmaker in NYC but now I’m a professor, filmmaker, and mentor to a bunch of young filmmakers in Columbus. I worked with Molly Kreuzman of Ohio Goes to the Movies to create a monthly filmmaker meet up group that now has over 250 members. In 2020, I made an independent film in Columbus called “They/Them/Us”. It stars Joey Slotnick and Amy Hargreaves and so best comedy at the San Diego Film Festival. It’s available to watch for free on Amazon Prime, Tubi, and Roku. I have two new scripts I’m working on that I hope to shoot soon.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every day is a struggle in the independent film business. It is hard to finance movies, cast movies and now the old distribution models are broken. But streaming offers the chance to get movies seen, if not to get paid a living wage though.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve made mostly romantic comedies, including a film called “I’m With Lucy” that has very known actors that you can watch for free on Tubi. But now I’m writing a thriller too. I’ve made larger movies than most people in the Columbus film community so I’m always happy to offer creative and career advice.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Persistence and an inability to take “no” for an answer. I don’t listen to any noise or gossip about me or my friends and artistic community.
