Today we’d like to introduce you to Ava Perkins
Hi Ava, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of science and creativity. That passion led me to pursue a career in cosmetic chemistry after ending a 12-year water polo career during the COVID-19 pandemic. My journey began with a degree in Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design at the University of Toledo, where I fell in love with the challenge of formulating products that not only work but also bring joy and confidence to people’s lives. Along the way, I immersed myself in the industry working in various internships (sometimes several at the same time), engaging in research, and mentoring others who share my curiosity about the beauty world.
What really shaped my path was my desire to educate and inspire others. Whether it’s through teaching, creating informative content on social media, or working with organizations like the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, I’ve made it my mission to make cosmetic science approachable, accessible, and fun. Now, as I pursue my PhD in Biomembrane Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, I’m focused on deepening my expertise and engaging in the community while working toward my long-term goal of becoming an educator after I graduate.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where I am today has been anything but smooth, but those challenges have shaped who I am and fueled my passion for cosmetic science. One of the most significant struggles I faced was during my water polo career. After sustaining my first head injury in 2016, I began a four-year journey of recovery from multiple concussions, which led to neurological, vestibular, and mental health issues. It was a grueling process that tested my resilience and required hard work, perseverance, and the support of my family, friends, and healthcare team.
These challenges not only sidelined me from the sport I loved, but also forced me to reevaluate my priorities and identity. The pandemic further marked a turning point in my life when my collegiate water polo career abruptly ended, and I shifted my focus entirely to academics. It was during this transition that I discovered my passion for cosmetic science and wanted to support people in finding their passion, too.
While the road has been difficult, it’s also been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t trade the experiences that have brought me here today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sometimes my work feels complicated to explain as I have my hand in several parts of the cosmetic and personal care industry. My professional training allows me to formulate skincare, haircare, and color cosmetic products for business owners who aspire to bring their vision to life. I enjoy fostering close relationships with brand founders while contributing to their ideas coming to fruition. I also frequently participate in speaking engagements for beauty conferences, webinars, podcasts, and student organizations talking about my research, misinformation on social media, essentials you would need to know about cosmetic formulation, and sometimes leading hands-on formulation workshops. I also have a presence on social media where I break down complex cosmetic science topics, debunk misinformation, and collaborate with brands. Additionally, I am pursuing my PhD in Biomembrane Sciences where I partake in research and teach or assist with the cosmetic science labs.
What I’m most proud of is my commitment to education and outreach. At the University of Toledo, I created the first Outreach Team for the Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design program. This initiative reached over 1,500 students, inspiring many from underrepresented communities to explore careers in STEM. I’ve also developed hands-on formulation activities that make cosmetic science accessible, approachable, and fun—helping bridge the gap between science and creativity.
What sets me apart is my ability to foster personal connections across social media, academia, and in the industry. Through social media, I’ve built a community of students, enthusiasts, and professionals who are curious about cosmetic science, connecting with people from all over the world to make the field more accessible. In academia, I’ve mentored students, collaborated with peers, and inspired high schoolers to see themselves in STEM careers. Within the industry, I’ve worked closely with brands, chemists, and leaders who are passionate about their jobs. These connections allow me to engage with people at every stage of their journey—whether they’re just discovering cosmetic science or shaping its future.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I simply cannot live without my Outlook app, it majorly helps me stay on top of all of my responsibilities. I also have been utilizing the Calm app to stay grounded amid all the chaos.
