M, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
What started as a small family-run quail farm has grown into so much more over the last decade! When we began our family farm, WoodBottom Quail Farms, LLC, coturnix quail were the main focus. Eggs were shipped nationwide, a full cycle hatchery allowed for the delivery and pickup of birds within a several state area, and quail meat was supplied to the high end restaurants around the Cincinnati area. Homegrown vegetables and jams were added in, along with chicken eggs, opening us up to participate in several farmer’s markets in the Cincinnati area. When COVID struck, markets were closed down and quail feed pricing rose dramatically. We restructured our small business, altering our name to WoodBottom Farms LLC, focusing on what has become our main product, Bourbon Infused jams, jellies, and caramel sauce. WoodBottom is now in over three dozen retail outlets in the Greater Cincinnati area, NKY, Columbus, and Athens, and most recently we began spreading out to restaurants. WoodBottom Farms celebrated its 10th year anniversary just a few months ago and is continually expanding into other areas, having just released Cincinnati Half Step Chili seasoning packets, created from our family’s 80+ year old recipe.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been ups and downs, as with any small business. We take it in stride, and with the goal of just doing our own thing and being happy and kind along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
WoodBottom Farms was created a decade ago with the intent of offering all natural sustainable products to the public. We create small batch award winning artisan bourbon infused jams, jellies, & caramel sauce, along with Cincinnati Half Step Chili seasoning packets available in over three dozen retail outlets, at weekly events and demos, and curb-side pickup. WoodBottom Farms is a member of Ohio Proud, and we only use Ohio made items in our products, including lids, rings, jars, labels. All of the fruit we use is either grown here on the farm or sourced within a 15-mile radius.
What are your plans for the future?
We are working diligently to complete a commercial kitchen on the farm called “ The Sugaree” to be able to expand further in location and in new products. Completion date is set for this summer. This will be certified by the State of Ohio Department of Agriculture as a Cannery and Bakery.
