Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Belew
Hi Kim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I came to New Thought Unity in 2001 broken and hopeless. I had been through a series of really challenging life events left me feeling desperate and suicidal.
I have no idea what made me decide to try this spiritual center the day I had planned to kill myself but many had been recommending it to me for a few years and something made me decide to try it before following through on my plan.
In hindsight I know it was obvious that my soul wanted to live and was grasping at one piece of hope.
Once at service, I was located in a packed room and told that I was welcome and had a purpose. Two things I’d never experienced feeling in spiritual community and/or heard before. It obviously changed my life. As an openly queer person and someone who grew up in a cult religion where I was shunned , this was so life affirming.
I started attending regularly to see if I could find my purpose and not only did I find it, I continue to find it expanding. And part of my purpose is to help everyone know they too have a purpose.
So I discovered music writing as my first purpose and began performing music and related my first cd in 2009.
Since then my purpose has expanded into speaking, workshop leading and giving a tedx talk about my story of being trafficked as a child.
I am currently working on recording my third cd and I travel the country sharing message and music at spiritual centers and more. I’ve also won awards for my music and in 2020 I was asked if I’d consider being the spiritual leader of New Thought Unity and accepted that offer. I am currently working toward becoming a licensed minister while being the spiritual leader.
Something no one would have thought would ever happen, including me.
It’s proof that miracles happen every day and the power of believing you have a purpose can have on someone’s life.
What a profound gift!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not.
As I shared, I started out discovering music and songwriting as the first part of my purpose and I was sharing conscious rap.
Well, as you may know, rap is a genre of music that many do not like and so I experienced some pretty intense rejection because of that.
Often when I would get up to perform, 40+ people would walk out. It was discouraging to say the least.
The very place that showed me I have a gift, was also the place that I was experiencing pain around it.
I thought of quitting but then decided that part of my purpose was to continue to show up and stand in my purpose to help bring healing and connection between generations as well as myself.
Now everyone knows and supports me and my music which is wonderful and I also continue to write and perform my original raps and have expanded into singing and writing music that is not rap.
I’m so grateful because if I’d have given up during the hard time, I wouldn’t have gotten to discover so many more incredible passions and purposes in my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
A lot of things set me apart from others.
Being a female conscious rapper.
Having purple hair and tattoos.
I talk openly about my life from my sex trafficked childhood to addiction and recovery and poor life choices when I was young.
I also am a speaker who shares open and vulnerably from the heart and shake things up through my way of sharing message and music and inviting everyone to open and heal.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see New Thought Unity growing and thriving as a culturally and generationally diverse community that is a safe and honoring place for people of all backgrounds to grow and thrive.
I also see New Thought being a place that is pivotal in giving back to the walnut hills community by being a visible and viable place of love and support and financial success.
