Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Ouellette
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Colleen and I started the initial plans for Nutrition Empowered while we were roommates at OSU during our dietetic internship. We discussed our past journey that had led us to become dietitians and our vision for the future to help others who struggle how we had. We have grown a lot since we started Nutrition Empowered in the fall of 2021. At the time, we both had other full time jobs and only an average of 1 client at a time. We’ve grown exponentially since this time and are now seeing many more clients, building relationships with other businesses, offering additional services, and expanding our social media presence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Running a business is never completely smooth, but in the grand scheme we have been pretty lucky. Most of the struggles that we’ve faced have occurred while having to do and then redo a task in order to perfect it. Unfortunately, business management isn’t something we learned anything about in our training to become dietitians so it’s been quite the learning curve figuring it out on our own!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As Registered Dietitians, we counsel and guide our clients towards a variety of nutrition goals. Currently, Nutrition Empowered offers fully virtual one-on-one nutrition counseling. We specialize in seeing chronic dieters and working to help them heal their relationship with food. Other groups that we see regularly are PCOS and Women’s Health goals, as well as general nutrition such as diabetes and heart health education.
Our nutrition counseling services are highly personalized. Every situation is different, and working on an individual basis allows us to develop behaviors that work best for that specific individual. We consider working with our clients to be a partnership. We guide and educate them towards how to achieve their goals, but ultimately the hard work is done by our clients in implementing the information into their lifestyle. We are proud to say that we take both insurance and self-pay payment options in an effort to make counseling accessible for as many people as possible.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
There are so many things that we wish we knew earlier when we were starting out. The best advice that we can give now to those looking to start a business is just to get started! If you have a vision, take the first steps, and don’t be afraid to ask others for help. We learned most of our information by talking to other businesses who we admired. We just asked them to sit down and help us by answering our questions and guiding us through processes we didn’t understand (often at a cost, time is money in a business). We found this to be incredibly more helpful than trying to figure out these things on our own!
