Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Morgan
Hi Jenn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up in a “fudge family” meant I was always eating fudge, making fudge or talking about fudge – and I didn’t think there was anything weird about that. My family fudge recipe came from my grandmother, and included details for only three flavors – Peanut Butter, Chocolate and Butterscotch. To some, this would have been enough. But not for me! 🙂
I believe fudge should be as exciting and colorful as any other dessert. The feeling that I get when I walk into a candy store or an ice cream shop and see all the colors and flavors and choices is pure joy – and fudge should be no different.
The concept for my fudge business revolved around an ambition to create fifty flavors of unbelievably delicious and beautiful fudge that could change people’s perception of what fudge could be. So in 2020, Fudge By Jenn was launched. I experimented with my family recipe until I created fudge bases that could handle high-impact flavor, while still keeping the smooth texture the recipe known for. (And of course, keeping the original three flavors nearly identical to my grandmother’s.)
It didn’t take long to get some traction, and over the the next few years I was active in vendor shows, had my fudge carried in various retail locations, and filled porch pick up orders, all while thinking up that next new flavor. By 2024, I had cataloged 250 flavors – each one unique and delicious.
By this point, Fudge By Jenn had run its course as a trial-and-error side hustle and was upgraded to Fifty Flavors Fudge Shoppe this past summer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My main job has been a stay-at-home mom for my two boys. When I launched the business in 2020, they were only 3 and 5 years old. So I had no choice but to baby-step it. But I kept moving forward, doing what I could, growing little by little, checking things off the business list one item at a time. Once both boys were in school full time and I had more substantial time to put into the business, I was thrilled to discover that a lot of the boring leg work was already completed. So for the most part, it has been a smooth road, but a very long and slow one.
We’ve been impressed with Fifty Flavors Fudge Shoppe, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My desire to run a successful fudge business has never overshadowed my passion to make and preserve the family recipe. There is no room for shortcuts or commercial batch-starters. Every piece is hand-made, hand-stirred, hand-cut and hand-packaged. I’ve been contacted by sales teams from corporate companies that specialize in large-scale batch starters and equipment – all promising me faster and larger fudge production. However, I know it wouldn’t be my fudge.
Growing up, I didn’t know just how good my grandmother’s fudge was because it was all I knew. Once I was older and tried other recipes, and once I started gifting my fudge as holiday gifts, I began to realize that what I had was truly unique.
The feedback on the fudge was nonstop. People who even claimed to “hate fudge” would rave about its texture and flavor. Even now, when I’m giving out free samples at an event, I smile every time someone’s face lights up with surprise and delight. Since my grandmother and my mother have passed on, this business is a really special way to honor them.
The website – fiftyflavorsfudge.com – contains all my info, from upcoming events to a searchable flavor catalog. Although I only schedule one or two vendor events a month, online ordering for porch pick up is always available.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I launched the business in 2020. Like a lot of people, Covid helped me zone in on what brings me joy. I just love being “the fudge lady!”
