Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke D. Rosen
Hi Luke D., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Cincinnati, and had a very strong vocal and choral program at my high school, Elder High School. This led me to Bowling Green State University for college, where I majored in Choral Music Education (ALMOST received a degree also in Music Composition), and also a masters in Choral Conducting Performance. I taught for 15 years at St. John’s Jesuit High School, and now teach middle school and high school at Evergreen Local Schools in Metamora, OH.
Last year, I became the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Perrysburg Chorale. We had a great season last year, and we are building on that success this year. We just completed our Halloween concerts, and next up is Brahms’ Schicksalslied with the Perrysburg Symphony. We will also be singing at Rosary Cathedral in Toledo for their Carol Sing just before Christmas, premiering a Four Seasons piece (written by me) in March, a Broadway Cabaret in April, and a singer-songwriter concert at the Valentine as our annual fundraiser in May.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a professional musician is always a rough road, but I choose to embrace the bumps.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a conductor and pianist, I always strive to bring out the drama which is inherent in every piece of music. I try to connect with exactly what the composer is trying to say, and make each statement the composer writes speak clearly.
As a composer, I like to play with textures and colors. I like chord progressions which are interesting and unexpected, and when text is involved, I want the text to be the primary focus.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Transporting the listener to a new place is what matters most to me. There is so much hurt, pain, and violence in the world, and people want to go somewhere else through art. I don’t believe in ignoring the issues of the world, and I include them in my pieces, but I also give a path to somewhere new.
