Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Sánchez
Hi Tristan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in broadcasting as an intern at Q104 in Cleveland during the summer of 2005. After pursuing more opportunities, and graduating with an Associate Degree from Cuyahoga Community College in 2007 and a Bachelor’s Degree from Malone University in 2010, I was hired as a board operator and producer at Radio One Cleveland. I would make the move to both Ideastream Public Media and Rubber City Radio Group in 2022, where I still work to this day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been smooth. For my 11-plus years at Radio One, I wanted to do a lot than running the On-air boards, but I struggled to find those who were willing to give me the proper break I wanted to pursue. After dealing with a constant revolving door of management and talent, I needed to go where I can flourish and pursue more opportunities. Getting noticed and trying to go after different gigs had been a challenge without using my contacts.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an Announcer/Operator for 89.7 WKSU and 104.9 WCPN Ideastream Public Media. I also serve as a tech producer for the midday shift from Noon to 4pm.
I’m also a Sports Producer and fill-in Morning Show Producer at 93.5/1590 WAKR and an On-air host for 94.9 WQMX at the Rubber City Radio Group.
I go on the air for WKSU introducing the underwriting, tagging promos, and doing service for listeners with weather, traffic, and breaking news and station items such as promoting Ideastream events and shows.
At WAKR and WQMX, I get highlights from sporting events, make sure the morning show is running smoothly, and even help with the music for WAKR. I come on in between songs at WQMX, with weather updates, station promotions and news on different country artists.
I’m most proud of being able to serve listeners with different programming, making sure everything is on, and being able to do what I love, which is radio.
I’m dedicated to my work and the places I work at. I have become a utility player where others have started to notice me.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The biggest risk I took was making the move to Ideastream and RCRG. Going from a place where I was at for more than a decade into unknown territory was scary for me at the time. Now I look back and I’m glad I made the move.
Risk can be challenging when it comes to taking that first step. Sometimes it pays off, other times it doesn’t. If anyone holds you back from taking that risk, consider their opinions, but don’t let it stop you if it is worth pursuing.
