Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Mosley
Hi Hannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Hannah Mosley, and my story is that I am constantly learning and growing in the art field. I started off drawing, and diving into crafts at a very young age, and the curiosity to try something new has followed me into adult hood. The earlier memory I had to being exposed to art work was through seeing my mother paint. Though she was not a professional painter, she enjoyed painting in my childhood home in the Heights. She would seldom paint my bedroom with children’s book characters, and use the beautiful tones that carried the narrative across the walls. I believe that in those moments in watching my mother paint, it instilled the concept that I could do that very thing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would not describe the life of an artist smooth, but ever-learning and ever-changing. I initially started in photography before going into illustration full-time. I had photographed weddings, graduations, fashion portraits and family gatherings. Then it shifted to graphic design, which I still continue to do for work; but within that I fell in-love with the art of drawing again. There are so many bends and slopes that I’ve experienced, and truthfully, it’s not been easy- but they’ve taught me the biggest lessons. In art, the common theme is to try it out even if it looks “unappealing” or “ugly”, if you continue on it will eventually start to come together-and that’s all part of the trial and error.
My relationship with Christ has also influenced the nature of how I approach my work as well. To be curious about the way color, texture, pattern communicate to one another in everyday life, and being amazed by the simplest things is an ode to the way that God moves and works within in me. I find that even in those moments of struggle, I’m always inspired.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a media artist and illustrator based in Columbus, Ohio, specializing in creating visuals and story telling of the everyday moments. My work often blends deep earth tones, the play with textured hair, and faceless figures across each composition. I’m passionate about illustration as a medium because of its ability to connect with audiences in ways that feel personal and imaginative.
A significant part of my creative journey is inspired by my relationship with God. My faith influences the themes in my work, encouraging me to focus on hope, wonder, and the beauty found in the mundane. This perspective gives my approach a deeper meaning, a reminder that creativity is not just about making something beautiful but about reflecting God’s love and the stories He places in our hearts.
One of my proudest accomplishments was curating a collection for the Cleveland Botanical Garden. This opportunity shaped the vision I have for future projects, inspiring me to pursue meaningful creative endeavors. While I had never curated a show before, collaborating with others in the art community for feedback and guidance made it an incredible learning experience. It was deeply rewarding not only to create for a larger audience but also to share the experience with my wonderful family and friends. Those moments were truly impactful and will always hold a special place in my journey as an artist.
I believe what sets me apart from other artist is finding a story behind everything in every moment; whether I’m driving down the highway stuck in traffic, taking a walk in a local park, or making dinner after a long day at work-I’m able to make story in those everyday human experiences.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’ve accumulated several books over the years, especially from my undergraduate studies in design. These include foundational design books that explore typography, layout, and visual storytelling, as well as contemporary art books I’ve picked up from museums I’ve visited. Both types of books have been invaluable for inspiration and learning, offering me fresh perspectives and techniques to incorporate into my work.
While I’m not a huge podcast listener, there are a few I keep coming back to that have significantly impacted my creative journey. The Art Marketing Podcast by Art store-fronts offers practical advice on building a sustainable art business. It’s super insightful, especially for someone navigating the intersection of creativity and entrepreneurship. The SCBWI podcast has been a fantastic resource for learning more about the world of children’s publishing, which is something I’m passionate about as an illustrator. Lastly, Revision Path provides a platform for Black designers and creatives to share their stories, offering inspiration and a sense of community that has deeply resonated with me.
These resources have been particularly helpful during my design classes and while building my website, guiding me through process work and helping me structure my ideas more effectively. I even listen to some of these podcasts while working on creative projects—it’s a great way to stay motivated and navigate the steps of a project with more clarity.
