Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Shell.
Dylan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My brother Austin and I spent most of our lives traveling with bands. We started making a documentary about the music scene and from there we picked up business as we went. People liked what we were doing so they hired us for music videos, other people liked those and we started getting contacted for other work, Commercials, brand docs, short films. The business started to snowball , the more work we did, the more people would hit us up for jobs. So I guess that meant we were doing something right. Eventually we started getting hired for feature films and that has become our main focus.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth, lol. The struggles have been many and numerous. We struggled at first with just not knowing what to do. We never went to any kind of film school and we didn’t really have guidance on how to navigate the business, so it was a lot of learning by failure. On top of just bumbling around at first, film gear is crazy expensive, and we were BROKE. Many of the skills we utilize today were born from having to figure out work arounds on projects that didn’t have the correct gear to do the shots we were trying to pull off.
Our ideas have always been bigger than our budgets.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We offer a service that most people do not offer. We can take a project from start to finish and beyond. We have been involved in this business for long enough that we have made contacts around the world in all the areas of the industry. We use our connections to bring a level of production value that most companies could not achieve with the efficiency that we can, we specialize in making any budget look bigger than it is. Our focus has been on Narrative feature films lately but it isn’t the only thing we do. We still produce commercial, documentary, brand and event coverage projects. We are always looking for new adventures to go on and new projects to help with, so if you’ve got an idea and a budget, HIT US UP! www.CRUCIBLE-MEDIA.com
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The film industry is rapidly changing. It is very hard to predict, but we have been seeing a shift to more “indie” projects while the big major studios re-organize and re-evaluate how to operate after the recent film worker union strikes.
In the documentary world it seems like people tend to be more interested in personal “ground level” stories. The internet is flooded with low effort content and I don’t think it is a sustainable trend. I think people just like things that feel more genuine and personal. We aim to produce stories that matter and are not just looked at as content.
