Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Contreras
Alyssa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up I often felt pressure to avoid being too “feminine” or “girly.” Many people around me associated those traits with weakness, and I was determined to prove my strength. This mindset carried through as I pursued my associates degree in exercise science and began my career as a yoga teacher, where I found empowerment in physical and mental discipline.
However, my perspective shifted dramatically when I entered the world of pageantry. Winning the title of Miss Lake Erie has been a transformative experience. Pageantry, far from being a superficial endeavor, has shown me the incredible strength and resilience required to compete at this level. It takes confidence, intelligence, and poise to stand on that stage and represent not just myself, but also my community.
The journey to where I am now has been filled with growth and self-discovery. Initially, I hesitated to embrace pageantry, fearing it might contradict my commitment to strength and empowerment. Instead, I found it to be a platform that amplifies those very qualities. Competing for Miss Ohio next year is not just about winning a title—it’s about showcasing the multifaceted strength that women, including myself, possess.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entering the world of pageantry brought its own set of challenges. Overcoming my preconceived notions about pageantry was the first hurdle. I had to push past the stereotypes and understand that pageantry is not just about beauty; it’s about intelligence, advocacy, and resilience. Preparing for competitions meant rigorous training, honing my public speaking skills, and developing a deeper understanding of the issues I care about.
Additionally, there were moments of self-doubt and fear of judgment. Competing in pageants requires putting yourself out there in a very public way, which can be daunting. Learning to handle criticism and staying true to myself amidst the pressure was a significant part of my journey.
Despite these struggles, each challenge taught me invaluable lessons. They reinforced the idea that true strength lies in embracing all facets of who I am, including my femininity. The road may have been rocky, but it has shaped me into a more confident, resilient, and empowered individual, ready to take on the future with enthusiasm.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I wear many hats in my life, which keeps things exciting and dynamic. One of my passions is playing the electric guitar—a field where only about 6% of players are women. Being a half-Latina woman in this space adds another layer of distinction and pride. Music has always been a vital part of my life, and playing the electric guitar allows me to express myself creatively and break stereotypes about what women can do.
Winning the title of Miss Lake Erie is another highlight of my journey. It’s not just a crown but a symbol of the hard work, dedication, and resilience that I’ve put into my pursuits. Competing in pageants has taught me the strength it takes to stand confidently and advocate for causes I believe in. I’m most proud of how these diverse experiences come together to define who I am.
Whether it’s on stage with my guitar, in a yoga studio, or at a pageant, I strive to be authentic and passionate in everything I do.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a bundle of energy and constantly on the move. My thrill-seeking nature led me to explore the outdoors and seek out new adventures at every turn. I had a boundless curiosity and a love for learning that kept me engaged in various subjects. One of my biggest passions was animals; I couldn’t resist the urge to save and care for every animal I encountered. Whether it was a stray dog or an injured bird, I always felt a deep sense of responsibility to help. This combination of energy, curiosity, and compassion shaped my childhood and continues to influence who I am today.
