Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Spina
Rich, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As far back as I can remember I wanted to be singer/musician/entertainer After high school I joined a band that eventually became known as “Love Affair”. We signed our first record deal in 1980 and that summer our first single, Mama Sez, became a hit. We released 3 albums between 1980-1984 and though we were very successful performing live & toured extensively, we never achieved the level of national success we hoped for & disbanded in 1984. I then recorded a solo album under the name of “Richard & The Heartbeats” and in 1986 had regional hit with another self-penned song Somebody Loves You. After that, I became the keyboardist/musical director for Gary Lewis & The Playboys. I did that for 18 years while also backing up other artists while serving as musical director for different tour packages.
During that time I was also producing records and writing songs for other artists.
And in 2006 I became the keyboardist/production coordinator for “Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone”.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you’re self-employed full time and in the music business, it’s never a smooth road, but its always interesting & rewarding. I never referred to them as struggles, just new challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Since I already stated what I do, what I’m probably most proud of is that since I was 18 yrs old, I’ve been able to enjoy a full time career in music, never having to do anything else.
How do you define success?
Loving what I do for a living.
