Inspiring Conversations with Lashawn Taylor of Nu You Kidney Recovery Support Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashawn Taylor

Hi Lashawn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
February 3rd 2023, I had a kidney transplant after enduring kidney disease for 19yrs without dialysis at stage 3-4. My doctors didn’t want a emergency to happen so they urged me to go on the transplant list. My sons wanted to see if they were a match but unfortunately at the last test things didn’t work out. My husband who I met just 8yrs earlier wanted to see if he was a much but uet again things didn’t work out. We were told about a swap program where someone in my family would give their kidney and I would receive one. My sons wanted to do it but my husband was adamant that he would be the one. So we did the swap and had surgery hours apart. The surgery went well, but one month in I started feeling different, not like myself. The medications wrecked havoc on my body and my emotions. I realized I needed therapy to help me navigate through this transplant. I wanted group support also, because I knew I couldn’t be the only person that was feeling like I was. I ask my doctors and searched my area, but there was no group support. 3 months after the transplant I wrote a book and 6 months I started a non-profit to help individuals with kidney-related health challenges and those who have or will be having a kidney transplant. With the group support I have come a long way mentally and we all learn from each other. Our motto is ‘You will leave feeling better than when you came.’
I wanted to have different kind of organization that focuses on mental health and healing with mediation, Qi Gong practice and exercise.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My first year was a challenge. I had medical setbacks. My medications had constantly changed which wrecked havoc on my body, giving me alot of side effects. Anxiety, anger, uncertainty set in. Always a fear of rejection.

As you know, we’re big fans of Nu You Kidney Recovery Support Foundation . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am Founder/CEO of Nu You Kidney Recovery Support Foundation.

My organization offers a safe space for recipients, their families, and caregivers to share their experiences, connect with others facing similar challenges, and receive compassionate support from a community that truly understands. We have meditation, Qi Gong classes and exercise from certified instructors. We also have an in house therapists. I wanted my organization centered around health and wellness. Most kidney disease comes from high blood pressure and diabetes.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I wrote a book.
Are You Kidney Me? I had a transplant…

I share the untold aspects of my kidney transplant journey and how the medical community didn’t disclose all the intricacies. It’s a story about strength and vulnerability, and a testament to the unbreakable spirit.
