Conversations with Nikki James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki James

Hi Nikki, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story consists of becoming a photographer after suddenly becoming a widow and needing to provide for my kids. It reflects resilience, courage, and the power of turning a dream into reality in the face of adversity.

After the loss of my husband, I found myself at a crossroads—grieving, yet needing to provide for my children. But in that difficult moment, I turned to a dream that had always been close to my heart, one that my husband had envisioned for me. Photography, something he believed in, became not only a way to honor his belief in me, but also a path forward to build a future for my family.

Each session I photograph is infused with my unique perspective on life’s fleeting moments, understanding perhaps more deeply than others how precious these memories are. I’ve built a business that not only provides for my children but also keeps alive the dream your husband had for me—a testament to love, strength, and finding beauty in the midst of challenge.

My journey shows that even in the darkest of times, pursuing your passions can become a source of hope and a way to move forward. My story encourages others to find their strength, embrace their dreams, and believe that even in difficult circumstances, they can create something meaningful and lasting.

My story becomes even more powerful with the addition of my good friend Andie, who was there to help me start my photography journey. In the midst of the loss I faced, Andie stepped in, offering her unwavering support as I began to build a life for my family through photography. She helped me take the first steps in turning a passion into a way to provide for my children and carry forward the dream my husband always had for me.

With Andie’s encouragement and guidance, I found the strength to navigate both the personal and professional challenges. She was there, helping me set up my first sessions, offering advice, and reminding me of my talent. Together, we built not just a business, but a testament to friendship, resilience, and community.

My work as a photographer is a reflection of love and support—from my husband’s belief in my dream to Andie’s friendship that helped bring it to life. Through this journey, I’ve shown how powerful it is to lean on those around you and to find hope and strength in pursuing something meaningful, even in the hardest of times.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At first, it felt daunting, balancing the emotional weight of loss with the practical realities of starting a new career. But every time I picked up the camera, I was not only capturing moments for my clients, but also fulfilling a promise—to myself, to my husband, and to my children. My work became a source of healing, both for me and for the people whose lives I touch through my photography.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a photographer, I specialize in capturing the milestone moments of high school and college seniors. My work focuses on celebrating this significant transition in young people’s lives, creating portraits that reflect their unique personalities, accomplishments, and the bright futures ahead of them.

My sessions are thoughtfully crafted, with attention to detail in location, outfit selection, and posing, ensuring each senior’s individuality shines through. Whether it’s the excitement of a high school senior preparing for the next chapter or the pride of a college graduate about to embark on their career, I create images that not only preserve memories but tell each person’s story.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
COVID-19 brought unprecedented challenges to everyone, particularly for someone like me, who thrives on personal connection through photography. The pandemic forced physical distance, but it also created a deep need for connection in other ways. For me, it became an opportunity to forge even stronger bonds with my clients, ensuring that despite the distance, the emotional closeness remained.

In my senior sessions, this connection has always been key. I take the time to understand each client’s story—who they are, what matters to them, and what they want to remember about this special time. Whether it’s the hopeful high school graduate or the determined college senior, I approach every session with empathy and warmth, which became even more important during the pandemic. My clients likely appreciate how I made them feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated despite the challenges of the world around them.
