Today we’d like to introduce you to Jatanna Couch
Hi Jatanna , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My love for flowers started when I was a young girl, when in the warmer months I would get to help my grandma out in her garden. Her house was always very well kept and draped in so many beautiful flowers. She loved working in the yard and garden for hours a day. When I was maybe 4 or 5 she gave me my very fist teeny tiny watering can so I could help her in the garden, I fell in love with the way it felt to care and watch something so small and delicate become so beautiful over time. Her vegetable garden was always abundant too and we ate many meals made from it out on the patio in the summer months. It wasn’t until after I had traveled around a bit living a few different cities from North Carolina working in a local family owned restaurant near the Beach for a Summer. Living in Orlando working for Disney World as a Character Performer, to finding myself back home living just down the street from my grandma. Where I was reminded how much I loved flowers and creating something that could bring joy to others as well as myself. One evening while scrolling Instagram, I discovered a page called “Ameilia’s Flower Truck” they were located in Nashville, TN. I was enamored while I followed their page and put a pin in my virtual dream board and from then it sparked many late night thoughts on how I could make this dream a reality. I met my future husband not too long after this and we would talk about how maybe one day we could make my dream of flowers happen. 4 years later we got married in a beautiful lavender field in West Virginia and began searching for our dream starter home. My husband grew up in Waynesville, OH, so this place was always on our radar but it was a little hard for me to leave family knowing this move would be more permanent than all my other travels. We drove by this little house which wasn’t even up for sale one day and talked about what we may do if we ever lived in it. Little did we know the very next day it would go on the market and our realtor would reach out to us and ask if we would like to tour it the very next day. It was charming, it had enough yard to be able to start a little garden and maybe begin to really chase the dream I had from just a little girl. We put an offer in the next day with a beautiful letter written to the sellers about how perfect this home was for us and the very next day our offer was accepted. We moved in in September 2022 and began the plans for our little Garden. Meanwhile, I had begun traveling for Freelance floral work with my childhood best friend in 2021 and that was where my love of floral design really started to bud. Over the course of the next few years, I would continue to freelance when the opportunity would come and learn all about gardening which has given me a whole new appreciation for our farmers. You have to have a whole lot of patience, will to push through when things don’t go the way you think they will, and so much is out of your control when it comes to being fruitful in growing flowers or anything for that matter. Right now we have started to really get into the Wedding and Event side of the Floral Industry and its really where my heart is. There is just something about helping someone create the day of their dreams and being able to bring it to life and share in a joy filled day even just a small part that makes the little girl inside me still so excited. In the coming months we are navigating getting a website up and going and just streamlining everything to make planning your special day a little easier.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has most definitely not been easy. I spoke briefly of just some of the struggles that have come for us on the gardening side. One being we don’t have enough space if we would want to really produce a continuous flow of flowers all summer/fall long. The weather isn’t always in your favor. All that being said when growing flowers you can sometimes do everything a hundred percent correct and the flowers are like due to unforeseen circumstances we will be dying today.
On the Wedding and Event side it is really hard sometimes for people outside of the industry to understand the cost of flowers and the design work. Everything has gone up significantly in the past few years and i’m pretty sure everyone has been affected in some way. So my mission has been trying to educate on the value of what we do in the floral world, and also try to bridge the gap and help create something beautiful even on a smaller budget. A lot of time, training, and education helps the flowers be as beautiful as they can be on the day of your event that most of the time goes unnoticed because it isn’t the fun stuff everyone likes to see.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Wedding and Event Florist who specializes in bringing your own fairy tale to life by using flowers to tell your story. I am most proud of my Husband and I for continuing even though the path has not been easy. You get a lot of nos, you meet a lot of ghosts 😉 along the way and it’s not always easy to take the path less traveled. What following we have built is just through us and sharing and word of mouth right now which is special to us. I moved here just a little over two years ago and mainly only knew my husband and his family, Now he jokes i know more people here than he does and this is his hometown. My dream was always built on connection, you are not just another number to us when you choose to book with us. It is always an honor to be chosen to be part of your special day.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Waynesville, it’s so quiet and unique. I often refer to it like our own personal Stars Hallow. The community is strong here and it’s really special to see so many tight knit families and friends who come together to pour into the town to continue to help it grow and stay clean and beautiful. It’s definitely a special place to live and raise your family and feel safe.
