Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobi Brun
Tobi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began The Words Faire in February of 2024. It is an independent press focused on publishing breakout creatives, helping them to get their foot in the door of their chosen creative fields. As a writer myself, I know how hard it can be to break into an exclusive creative field, and I want to provide opportunities to anyone who would classify themselves as a ‘breakout creative’ to be able to collect publications and to share their work with an international audience. We publish digitally and in print themed collections on a quarterly basis.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles we have faced so far is to find revenue in a digital field of book selling- we are continuing to expand our local network of businesses who sell our books. Building a digital audience who reads our digital publication, and building our loyal readers who support our business.
We’ve been impressed with The Words Faire, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are known for specialized themed collection that are open to artists and writers of any walk of life. These ‘curated collections’ alternate between anthologies of fiction and nonfiction, and collections of themed art and writing. We take pride in curating intentional, thought provoking collections that speak to the inner experiences that we all share as humans. To do what creatives do best, connect humanity.
We also provide developmental editing services, along with specialized workshops that provide a creative space to find other breakout creatives.
We are also known for live typewriter poetry at our pop up events, providing personal keepsake poems off of any prompt for our customers.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk is a necessary leap into the unknown- which is crucial for starting a business in what some may call a ‘dying industry’.
Physical and digital independent booksellers are vastly overshadowed by the traditional publishers and their imprints, however, independent publishers play a key role in curating some of our finest modern literature. As we do not view the manuscripts in terms of market value, but in terms of literary value. Traditional publishers have less flexibility to make allowances for breakout creatives unless they have an assured hot seller on their hands- regardless of quality.
The risk for independent booksellers is a necessary one, to ensure that the literary market is not saturated with commercialized literature.
