Rising Stars: Meet Tatiana Farmer of Cleveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Farmer

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell in love with makeup after purchasing a Bobbi Brown makeup book at the school book fair. After seeing all the different looks and different complexions, I wanted to learn more. Growing up, my father was very strict. I wasn’t able to go to parties and indulge in activities that the other kids my age were able to. Because of this, around the age of 14 I would walk to my local Family Dollar and purchase makeup products. Makeup became my therapy. After my mother’s passing and trying to get acquainted with living with my father, I needed something that could allow me to escape. Makeup did just that for me. Going into college, people would see my makeup and just ask me to do theirs. That’s how I got into servicing clients. Being able to enhance people’s beauty on their important days has become something that brings me so much joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has most definitely not been a smooth road. I believe that comparison is the theif of joy. Along the journey it’s hard not to compare. I once felt behind because while some were able to jumpstart their makeup artist careers I was in school. Even being in college it would be rough being a young college student who couldn’t afford high end makeup products and lights that most makeup artists used. To this day it can be difficult but I don’t regret a thing. I’m grateful for my journey and I know God has kept me along my journey and has a plan for my and my business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a licensed makeup artist. I consider myself to be a versatile artist. I take joy in a variety of looks that could range from something like a soft glam or something that might include neon colors and rhinestones. I consider myself a creative. I do get the most joy out of being able to let my creative side soar and play with different colors and designs. Along my journey I am most proud that regardless of any obstacles or some imposter syndrome thoughts sneaking up, I’ve been able to be resilient. I’ve never given up and I owe that to God and the passion I have for what I do.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think that the lack of risk taking has hindered me in a sense. I try to keep things as safe as possible. I did take one risk that allowed me a great opportunity. I applied for an opportunity to take classes and work for a studio. It was something that I wouldn’t have normally done but I took the leap. I did an interview and an in person demo. To my surprise, the owner of the Makeup Institute loved me work and offered me the opportunity to work in her establishment. I learned a lot through that experience and although I am no longer there, I am extremely grateful for that opportunity and all that I was able to learn in that time.
