Today we’d like to introduce you to Diatra Lanham
Hi Diatra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About 10 years ago, my journey into content creation kicked off with the launch of my YouTube channel. I drew inspiration from other women of color who fearlessly shared their passions, paving the way by simply being themselves. My love for beauty and haircare led me to start creating content, pouring my heart into each video as if I already had some massive audience eagerly awaiting every upload.
Early on, I invested in products out of my own pocket, sharing reviews even when my following was minimal. Eventually, I sought out partnerships with hair companies, trading my reviews for wigs (not always top-notch, but they were free—gotta love that!). I enjoyed the process of testing new hair, offering my followers a preview before they made their own choices.
As my interests evolved, so did my content. The initial excitement of wig reviews faded, pushing me to explore a variety of my favorite topics—from fashion to makeup, skincare to different haircare lines—as I searched for my niche.
Within that search, I hit a SLUMP! Questioning my approach and comparing myself to other creators. Stepping back, I decided to focus inward, finding joy in the simple things again. I continued sharing what I loved on Instagram, learning to detach from metrics and focusing instead on my happiness. Strangely enough, this shift brought greater engagement and deeper connections with my audience.
Last year marked a turning point when I decided to fully recommit to my content creation journey. I missed the creative aspect of sharing things I’m passionate about and felt ready to reconnect with brands. This time, I prioritized joy and having fun over perfection, embracing platforms like Instagram and TikTok that suited my style better than YouTube.
Since diving back in, I’ve had the chance to collaborate with brands I once could only dream of. Embracing my identity as a niche-less creator has given me much more sense of being myself—I thrive when I can share my multifaceted interests without constraints.
Long story short, finding my creative flow hasn’t been a quick journey. I’m still a major work in progress and always will be! I’m grateful for every challenge and every brand that has believed in my work, from event invites to product partnerships and paid opportunities. The journey continues, with ups and downs that only make me that much better suited. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see what new opportunities lie ahead!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I briefly touched on this in the previous question, but one of the biggest struggles is comparison. Whether it’s comparing my journey to someone else’s or scrutinizing their growth and content style against mine, it can lead to unnecessary stress. I still catch myself falling into this trap, but I’ve learned to remind myself that not everyone will resonate with the content I create, and that’s perfectly fine. The right audience will discover me in due time, and my style will naturally appeal more to some than others. Diversity is what makes this industry so beautiful, in my opinion—there’s space for everyone.
Another challenge I face is finding time to pursue my passions outside of my full-time job. I try to use my “days off” for personal projects, but balancing that with spending time with family and friends who live in different cities can be difficult. Using days throughout the month to create batch content, along with turning time I’d typically spend lounging on the couch into productive periods, has been incredibly helpful in achieving a better work/life balance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a content creator (my friends and family jokingly call me an Influencer lol). I like to think of myself as niche-less, though my social media labels me as Lifestyle & Beauty. I cover a wide range of topics! From sharing my favorite makeup, skincare, and hair brands to documenting my travels. Lately I’ve even been diving into home decor and fashion, which has been so much fun!
My audience trusts me for honest content and reviews. While I appreciate aesthetics, I prefer authenticity over perfect staging every time. My content reflects my diverse interests and what brings me joy—it’s a true reflection of who I am. Being genuine and sharing authentically is what fuels my passion for creating.
I take pride in my determination and my commitment to continuous learning. Every day is an opportunity to discover something new, and I embrace it! I believe that the key to setting yourself apart lies in being genuine and connecting with your audience. The girls that get it, will get it.
