Conversations with Jennifer Northcutt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Northcutt

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my photography business in 2015, and from the very beginning, I knew I wanted to specialize in newborn photography. Understanding the importance of these early memories, I dedicated myself to mastering the art of newborn photography.

Every step of the way, I have focused on building a business that not only creates beautiful images but also makes the photography experience as easy and enjoyable as possible for families with babies. I understand how important these memories are and strive to provide a full service service, ensuring that every family feels relaxed and at ease during their session.

My natural light studio is located in Centerville’s historic district at 59 S. Main Street. I have designed a beautiful and inviting space where families can relax and enjoy their sessions. Additionally, I hold photography permits for all Washington Township parks and Five Rivers MetroParks, offering lovely outdoor locations.

Everything needed for a session is available in the studio, including a curated wardrobe for the entire family. Additionally, I collaborate closely with a talented makeup artist who conveniently provides her services on-site for in-studio sessions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a single operator of my photography business, wearing many hats has been my biggest struggle. While mastering my camera, posing techniques, understanding lighting, and perfecting the intricacies of editing are crucial aspects of my work, I’ve had to extend my skill set.

I’ve embraced the role of a website developer, building and maintaining a professional online presence that effectively showcases my portfolio and services. Marketing has become another key area of focus; I continuously strive to master various strategies to reach and engage my target audience effectively.

In addition, I serve as a styling consultant, advising clients on wardrobe choices to ensure their photos are visually cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. Designing albums and creating wall galleries are other facets of my business, where I channel my creativity to produce tangible, lasting memories for my clients.

Even predicting the weather for outdoor sessions has become essential for planning and executing successful shoots. Balancing these diverse responsibilities has indeed been demanding, but it has also enabled me to provide a comprehensive and personalized experience for my clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in newborn, maternity, and baby’s first year photography. I am often recognized for how well I interact with small children and have even been affectionately dubbed the “baby whisperer” by many of my clients.

I am dedicated to being recognized for delivering a truly full-service photography experience. This commitment starts with planning of each session, ensuring that every detail aligns with my clients’ preferences. I offer a curated selection of beautiful wardrobe options available in the studio, allowing clients to effortlessly find the perfect attire for the entire family.

Beyond the session itself, I don’t believe my job is done until my clients are enjoying their images. I enjoy creating quality, tangible products. From designed albums to custom wall galleries, I craft heirlooms that my clients will treasure for years to come. My goal is to provide a seamless and enriching experience that not only captures precious moments but also transforms them into lasting memories, thoughtfully presented and beautifully preserved in their homes.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
When COVID-19 first emerged and Ohio was shut down for five weeks, babies were still being born, and families were eager to document those precious moments. Despite the restrictions, parents patiently waited until I could safely photograph their newborns. Like many businesses, photography studios were not considered essential, so I had to adapt by offering outdoor sessions for newborns. This was a new and unique challenge.

Once the studio reopened, I implemented several changes to ensure the safety of my clients. I stopped scheduling sessions back-to-back to allow ample time for thorough cleaning between each session. I also wore a mask for the majority of 2022 to protect the health of the families I worked with, especially the tiny ones in my studio.

This experience taught me the importance of flexibility and adaptability. It reinforced my commitment to providing a safe and comfortable environment for my clients, no matter the circumstances. It also highlighted my dedication to families to preserving their special moments, even during challenging times.
