Rahim Ewan talks Philanthropy and supporting the next generation of teachers in Jamaica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rahim Ewan

Hi Rahim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
During the pandemic, many individuals discovered their entrepreneurial spirit, using their time at home to innovate and think outside the box. In our case, my family focused on the profound impact of education and recognized that countless individuals worldwide lack the means to pursue higher education due to financial constraints.

Inspired by my father’s upbringing in Jamaica, we decided to establish a non-profit organization dedicated to providing 4-year scholarships to students at his alma mater, Central High School in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica. We developed a strategic plan to support academically talented but underrepresented youth who faced barriers to furthering their education due to financial limitations.

Thus, the Ivan Scholarship was born, named in honor of my grandfather Ivan Ewan, a staunch advocate of education. He believed that knowledge and education are invaluable assets that empower individuals, creating a shield against life’s challenges.

Since its inception, the Ewan Educational Foundation has successfully awarded 4-year scholarships to four deserving high school graduates, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams. Our ultimate goal is to support aspiring educators, enabling them to obtain their education and return to their communities to educate future generations—a testament to the cyclical nature of education and community empowerment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When you’re genuinely creating opportunities for others, the challenges don’t feel as daunting compared to other endeavors. Our biggest hurdle has been securing the funds necessary to support students. As a nonprofit providing financial assistance, our goal is to offer scholarships to as many deserving individuals as possible, but resources are limited.

We’ve invested significant time and personal funds into advancing our cause. As we continue to expand, we aim to raise awareness so others recognize the importance of our mission and join us in empowering youth to excel academically.

While I believe every scholarship we provide makes a meaningful impact, I also recognize that one scholarship alone isn’t enough. My ultimate dream is to assist all those in need and establish a foundation that cultivates future leaders.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my professional career, I serve as an executive in talent acquisition with a specialization in diversity, equity, and inclusion. I travel to various colleges and conferences nationwide, representing one of the top 10 companies globally, where I recruit top talent. My mission is clear: to create opportunities for bright individuals from underrepresented communities who possess the skills and leadership qualities to drive cultural change within organizations, yet often go unnoticed.

Alongside my corporate role, I am proud to be a professor at a Historical Black College in Florida, teaching critical thinking in business. This course equips students with essential skills for the professional world, including interview techniques, professional development, and the importance of presenting oneself with confidence and professionalism.

What sets me apart and fills me with pride is my commitment to empowering others through education. I’ve chosen a career path that not only educates young men and women on preparing for success but also encourages them to bring others along on their journey. I believe that access to information is crucial; it’s what bridges the gap and ensures that no one gets left behind. I am honored to stand in the path, providing resources and opportunities to those striving for personal and professional growth.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is knowing that I’m making a difference, not just for myself but for others. When my son grows older, I want him to understand that his father worked to create opportunities and support for those who need it most.

Seeing the joy on students’ faces as they cross the graduation stage, knowing they’ve been awarded a 4-year scholarship, brings me immense happiness. Witnessing their realization that their hard work and dedication have paid off academically, despite initial doubts about pursuing their dreams due to financial constraints, is truly fulfilling. It’s priceless to see them recognize that someone believes in their potential and is willing to sponsor their journey because we see greatness in them. That expression of happiness is more than words can capture—it’s a profound joy.
