Meet PrettyP of Columbus

Today we’d like to introduce you to PrettyP

Hi PrettyP , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for music and creativity but I just didn’t know how I wanted to express myself without feeling overwhelmed from not choosing just one career to excel in. I started singing when I was young, around the age of 2. I grew up singing with my mom in the church choir and with my grandmother before she passed in 2010. I later auditioned for chorale in high school during my junior and senior year and was accepted both years. In chorale, I was able to tour all over Columbus singing and dancing for all kinds of people. After high school I discovered that I loved the camera and started vlogging. That’s how “PrettyP TV” got started. Now, I’m back to writing music doing what I ultimately love, to sing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I’ve struggled with my individuality for a long time. I knew I wanted to do something with my life but couldn’t focus on just one talent. I also struggled with self esteem issues from being that kid who was always the new kid in school because I moved around a lot. I was bullied in grade school for having a “white” name and being a black girl and for speaking “too proper” just because my mom raised me to be very articulate. It was horrible. Due to my low self esteem at the time, I “slept” on myself and put a lot of my passions to the side and kind of lost myself. I started to love myself a little more when I realized that I have a voice and people gravitated towards me. For reference, I was about 18-19 years old when I made this discovery. It was hard. I knew I had purpose but it was hard to see. I fell into a deep depression and isolated myself from almost everyone including family. It was a really bad time for me. All I wanted to do was give up and felt like I had no purpose in this world.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Now, I can now say I’m beginning to thrive in my purpose. I call myself “The Advocator of Self Love” because I truly had to learn how to love myself and all I want to do is teach others how to love themselves too. Today, I am a YouTuber, singer/songwriter, artist manager and creative director. I’m mainly known for being a social media artist manager for Retro Quality Records and my YouTube channel, “PrettyP TV”. I am most proud of my upcoming EP titled “Isolation Station”. On this EP I’ll be giving a raw, uncut invitation inside of my heart & mind. This is really personal to me & I really can’t wait to share it with the world. What sets me apart is that I’m a go getter. I get things done no matter what life throws my way. I’m a fighter no matter how much I’m hurting. And that’s really what my EP is about honestly…it’s a self motivated project that not only tells my audience how I’ve been dealing with depression and anxiety but also that I’m worth something and to keep going because better days are coming. I know this is just the beginning and I thank God for allowing me to go on this journey of adult self discovery.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t give up. I learned that I have to breathe & understand my emotions. Not only that, but it’s important to express emotions because if you don’t, you’ll go insane. I also learned how to understand my emotions to react appropriately. Often times I can be a hot head and be quick with my words. Staying patient and sometimes silent has saved me from a lot of conflict with myself and others. Most importantly I learned that being yourself and loving on yourself gets you further in life than trying to be someone else or trying to make yourself be something you’re not. God made you for a reason so make him proud and thrive in YOU.
