Conversations with Melissa Hopkinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Hopkinson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a solo nurse practitioner (NP) med spa. I graduated about 2.5 years ago with my family nurse practitioner. I have been in the medical field as a registered nurse for 12 years before deciding to go back to school for my NP. Before k graduated I decide to take some additional certification and training courses to kind of help set myself apart in the job search so I attend basic and advanced Botox fillers and aesthetics courses. About 3 months after graduation I ha d a full time job at an urgent care and a part time job working with aesthetics. Aesthetics quickly became a love for me. Because I absolutely loved the way it felt to help a wonderfully and beautifully made woman regain her self confidence. The med spa I worked at I quickly realized within 6 months that their core values did not align with mine. so I had a tough decision, do I go somewhere else or do I open up on my own or do I just say it was fun while it lasted.

My biggest supporter through this was my dad who pushed me to do what I love because I never will feel like work.

Shortly after our conversation he passed. At that moment is when I knew that if I didn’t at least try to go out on my own I would regret it. I also knew that no matter what he would be watching and supporting me the entire time.

Fast forward to now. I have been a solo practitioner for about 1 year and Im living off the good vibes and feels of getting to spend one on one time with my clients and building trusting an lasting relationships in my treatment room

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. When I first started out the state of ohio requires a collaborating physician to which I had one. 1 week prior to my grand opening the provider decided that they could no longer help me. I was unable to purchase/set up account for product in my treatment room. I had no idea how I was going to stay afloat. I picked up some other skills to help engage customer attention and begin focusing on Korean beauty skincare and treatments. A couple of months when by and I was able to finally secure my collaborator and get to work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am certified in Botox, fillers, microneedling, microchanneling, dermaplane, Korean bespoke facials and treatments, chemical peels, and medical weightloss.

I’m most proud and what sets me apart is that I love to educate my clients on the treatments I suggest or don’t suggest and how in the long scheme of things it will benefit them and help them reach their skincare goals by helping them
Find a balance with their skin, mind, body and soul. Allowing them build their self esteem and confidence one treatment at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family. My husband and my two children have done nothing but supported me through this business My husband took on the accounting for my business and not scolding me for all the “unnecessary” but necessary things for my space to grow. My kids for always being my hype team. Also recommending to their friends parents or teachers that I can help them out at my studio. And huge shoutout to my daughter who has started to dabble in photography and has helped me showcase my talents through her talent.
