Hidden Gems: Meet Anne Tyler of In Session

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Tyler.

Anne Tyler

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In my late 20s, I was at a point where I wanted to go to graduate school; however, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to study, so I ended up taking the prerequisites for nursing school. As it turns out, my brain could not wrap my head around the topics in the math and science courses, so I began to suspect that nursing might not be the path for me. During this time, my mom passed away, and I sought counseling for the grief as well as the aimlessness I was experiencing. As you might be able to guess, the experience was life-changing, and I began to look at schools in the Cleveland area that offered graduate programs for counseling. I ended up at Cleveland State University for their Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I truly loved the program. I always say that it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I have been out in the mental health world for ten years now, which seems hard to believe!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I truly have an amazing group of people who have helped me along each step of the way in opening In Session, but I have to say that doing the buildout of the space was the most challenging part of opening In Session. It was something I had never done before and was such new territory to navigate it became so overwhelming at times. Luckily, the person who helped design the layout of the space (Connor Wollenzier) really helped me understand the process and language of things. Then, to find a general contractor (Ben Gertz) who genuinely seemed excited to be a part of what I was doing helped me the rest of the way until it was completed. It was absolutely the most assertive I have ever had to be and what a humbling experience that was because assertiveness is one of the main topics I work with my clients on!

We’ve been impressed with In Session, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In Session is a design-forward mental wellness studio located in Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood, which opened in November of 2023. It was thoughtfully designed to enhance the therapeutic experience for both the client and the therapist and prioritizes therapists’ well-being so that clients receive the quality care they need and deserve.

All of In Session’s therapists provide a feminist lens to therapy, but each has its own specialty, including grief, peri- and post-partum, eating disorders, and existential concerns. We currently provided individual therapy to teens and adults and provide a space to explore pain and distress as a product of the world we live in and not inherent flaws within. We prioritize our values (autonomy, empowerment, collaboration, respect, kindness) and use them as guides in all of our work together, no matter what issues our clients are coming into address.

In Session is excited to focus on expanding offerings as the year progresses, including adding events, group therapy, and a free therapy service, as well as incorporating a boutique focusing on self-care brands that align with and complement the work we are already doing with clients.

What’s next?
Now that In Session has been open for over a year and gets more and more settled into the space each day, getting creative with events and collaborating with other organizations and businesses in the area feels like the next focus and an amazing way to be more involved in our neighborhood.
