Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Myers.
Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
On Christmas Eve, 2009, I saw a band by the name of Zhopa Mira at the Lemon Grove, original location, in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. The building and streets were teaming with life, smiling artists were laughing and talking, and the band was playing a kind of music that infused a wonder into me to continue to search for what life had to offer. Throughout my years, Youngstown has brought me into contact with people that have helped nurture my creative side, as a writer and musician, and also foster my passion for projects, leading me to run Fortified Construction, of which I own and operate.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Working in creative spaces, curating shows for artists and musicians, is a difficult field to maneuver from gumption alone; so is a construction company. The paperwork involved managing relationships, keeping promises, making deadlines, and forging a profit and future are roads filled with unseen potholes and black ice. But where you will slip and fall, there will be hands to help you up, give some guidance, and help you along. I am very fortunate in those around me, including my family, my friends, and clients, that have been with me and continue to move forward with me. It takes a village, as they say.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fortified Construction?
Growing into my late teens and early twenties, I began working in the trades as a roofer, which led me all over the country for work. Kentucky is a beautiful but hot state! As the years progressed, I worked through industrial mills, and full home remodel or new builds. People began to trust me to do larger scale, and higher end projects, leading me to hone how I thought about design, helping me foster my business now. I’m currently renovating a bathroom in the style of “Harry Potter’s,” Ministry of Magic. It’s a dream to be able to work with a client that has a vision, and the passion to go along the steps with me necessary to build it.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Garnering relationships with the community around me is my best advertising tool, and I think the best way to achieve that is through communication. I like to ask how people are doing, whether it be good or bad, because that creates somewhere for us both to stand and meet one another. Everyone has a say, and I think listening to what they are hoping to achieve is the best way to help them.
