Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny D.
Hi Penny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
To be honest, singing has been my jam since day one! In second grade, my teacher, Ms. Powers, a singer herself, shared that she sang background for Blaque, the girls who sang in “Bring it On,” my favorite movie back in 2001. She also performed covers for our school’s play, “The Bus Stop.” Hearing Ms. Powers sing left me gagged as a kid and ignited the realization that singing was my ultimate joy. She became the coolest person I knew who shared my love for singing. Fast forward through a performing arts school, high school choir, and a wild ride at an HBCU that took me from meeting Barack Obama to jet-setting to Israel, Cuba, Colombia, New York, New Orleans, etc., all thanks to my passion for singing.
After graduating college, unsure of my path, I knew I’d miss performing, having been consistent for the past 10 years since middle school. In 2018, I took a leap of faith, starting to create my own music.
Cut to the present day, and I’m knee-deep in crafting my debut EP, “Before The Party Radio.” Let me spill the tea lol a single is dropping on my birthday, April 5, and the full EP is set to Drop in July Hot Boy, Hot Girl Summer 🤣
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t been the smoothest, and I’m totally fine with that. I’m okay with grinding to reach the top because nothing in this world comes easy. I don’t want it if it’s easy—nada mucho, lol. However, some challenges have included consistency with content and music. Sometimes, you’re just not in your creative bag. It’s been difficult finding places to perform; it’s all about knowing your crowd. And let’s not forget the money—you want quality, so you’ve got to spend that check. My biggest bump? The foundation of supporters, and that’s self-explanatory.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
First and foremost, I will never compromise my authenticity – that’s what will set me apart from the get-go. I’m a vocalist, an artist, a creative director, and a vocal producer. On top of that, I also work as a high school music teacher. People recognize me for being just me – it’s hard to put into words, but when they know me, they know I’m all about quality, not quantity.
